Five best pocket-size cameras to take on your travels

Summer is out! Those who are itching to take a trip out of town or hankering for a thrilling off-road adventure or even an underwater deep dive will want to capture all their exciting moments on camera. Afterall, if you don’t get to show it off on social media, did it even happen at all? For that, we’ve listed the best compact, pocket-size cameras in 2022 that are perfect for vlogging your adventure on-the-go.

As substitute for bulky DSLR or mirrorless digital cameras, but notches ahead of your handy smartphone, these pocket-size cameras are perfect for those wanting to travel light, but still look for high resolution playback for any weather and occasion. Small enough to slip into your pockets and easier to fiddle with than your smartphone, these are the pocket-size cameras to get for your next travel.

Best Overall:  GoPro HERO 10 Black

eight Best pocket cameras to take on your travels gafencu gadget review gopro hero 10 black (3)
(Photo: Hero 10 Black, courtesy of GoPro)

The Specs: Starting at the top of the list is the Hero 10 Black by action camera specialists GoPro. Although we had hoped to find a worthy contender to trump the coveted Hero 10 Black, to the surprise of none, it remains at the top of the best action camera and pocket camera for travels. Versatile to the max, it can suit any occasion or situation, from high-intensity sports videos to underwater diving shots, or simply travel vlogs and day-to-day video journaling.

It shoots in 5.4k 23MP at 60fps and can dive underwater up to a depth of 33ft. It boasts an amazing HyperSmooth 4.0 video stabilization in all modes and performs brilliantly even in low light. It features a wide and extra wide angle lens that captures video and images in professional quality and also offers timpe lapse and slow-mo modes. It captures stills of 19.6MP videos as well as snap 23MP photos in its dedicated photo mode. It is also powered by a new GP2 processor that allows for smoother video playback, especially on its improved front-facing screen.

The Cons: Despite the impressively clear resolution of its specifications, the one flaw that we can point out is that its colour contrasts and range of colour profiles fall flat on details and its built-in microphone could have been made to sound more detailed.

The Verdict: With a shock-proof case that is mountable to a wide range of different accessories, and full-automatic feature, this action / pocket camera is the perfect companion for adventure-seekers and beginner vloggers. It even allows for cloud connectivity for easy and instant sharing.

Most Compact: DJI Osmo Pocket 2

eight Best pocket cameras to take on your travels gafencu gadget review dji osmos pocket 2 (3)
(Photo: Osmos Pocket 2, courtesy of DJI)

The Specs: Ultra-compact and light weight, the Osmos Pocket 2 by drone experts DJI has put out a pocket-size vlogging camera perfect for capturing memorable moments on your travels or day-to-day. Despite its miniature size, it packs impressive specs. Most notably, its impressive image stabaliser, thanks to its built-in 3-axis stabilization and ActiveTrack 3.0 technology which captures clear and focused movements while on-the-go.

The device shoots in a 4K wide angle in 24fps with a pretty clear built-in microphone. It also features various shooting modes such as, time lapse, slow-mo, and even a story mode that offers video and music templates for short film compositions — simplifying video production and photography while on-the-go. It firmware technology also allows for users to seamlessly switch from video to photo mode with a simple click of a button, perfect for those who love collecting snapshots of their travels and experiences.

The Cons: Although the device offers a myriad of shooting modes to choose from, its quality and functionality can be limited depending on which mode you’re in. For example, active tracker and face tracking isn’t available in 4K mode and the ability to zoom in on slow-mo mode is absent.

The Verdict: There’s not a lot to complain about with the DJI Osmos Pocket 2, but if there are any drawbacks to this is, it would be that it does not compare to the image and video quality you would get from a DSLR, which isn’t surprising given the size of this pocket camera. Although there could be some improvements on consistency of quality throughout the different shooting modes, overall it is a great pocket-size camera to take on travels for day-to-day journaling, vlogging and easy editing.

Best All-rounded 360 Cam: Insta360 One X2

(Photo: One X2, courtesy of Insta360)

The Specs: Never miss a shot because its 360 lens captures EVERYTHING, allowing for efficient, effortless, and stress-free video editing. It shoots in an impressive 5.7K quality in 24fps in a more dynamic range of colour profiles and modes, such as stable cam, 150-degrees wide angle, selfie mode, stable cam mode and of course 360-degree mode.

It’s small enough to fit in your pocket, and holds comfortably in the hand, and with instant connectivity to your smartphone and a dedicated editing app, sharing memorable adventures and amazing video content with friends and family is made even easier. Did we mention that this camera is also IPX 8 waterproof up to 8 meters underwater without a case?

The Cons: The only drawback is that its firmware can be a little laggy when switching from one mode to the other, and has been criticised for occasionally freezing in between modes. And although the battery life is a vast improvement from its predecessor it still only captures about 60 to 80 minutes of high resolution video. For this we suggest to pack extra batteries.

The Verdict: Nonetheless, the strengths definitely outweigh the drawbacks with this pocket-size camera. Making this a versatile action camera that boasts the unique feature of a 360-angle for an immersive throwback of every moment.

Best for Beginners: Akaso Brave 7 LE

eight Best pocket cameras to take on your travels gafencu gadget review akaso brave 7 (3)
(Photo: Akaso Brave 7 LE, courtesy of Akaso)

The Specs: The Specs: The Akaso Brave 7 is the brand’s most expensive model to date, but still it is one of the most affordable action cameras on the market that will still offer decent quality videos and photos. It shoots 4K videos in 30fps and 20MP photos. With a 6-Axis Image Stabiliser, its video quality isn’t the best on the market right now but it does score points above brands like GoPro and DJI in areas like battery life and convenience.

It is IPX 7 waterproof without a case, and can dive 1 meter underwater (farther with a waterproof case) and has the feature of switch shooting modes while underwater with its touch-screen dual screen, which most action cameras don’t. With this device you can also choose to shoot in time-lapse and slow-mo in 60fps HD mode for all those high impact action moments.

The Cons: A major drawback to the camera, especially for those who enjoy narrating their day-to-day and travels is that, although it is built in with an internal mic, the audio clarity and quality is not comparable to that of GoPros or Camcorders, and it does not support external mic.

The Verdict: Overall, the Akaso Brave performs well and comes complete with several accessories and mounts upon purchase, which makes it much more affordable than that of GoPro and DJI models, although it is the brand’s most expensive model to date. It will serve well for beginners and those who prefer convenience.

Best for Photos: Ricoh GR IIIx

eight Best pocket cameras to take on your travels gafencu gadget review ricoh gr iiix (2)
(Photo: Ricoh GR IIIx, courtesy of Ricoh)

The Specs: For a compact substitute for a DSLR, Ricoh has put out a pocket-siz camera that makes one-handed shooting comfortable and effortles. It shoots 24.4MP through an APS-C sensor and 40mm high-resolution GR fixed lens.

It fits comfortably in the pocket and scores high for its portability, convenience and quality that serves street photographers and photography enthusiast a golden balance between high resolution cameras and mobile phones. Those who enjoy everyday photo journaling will find themselves reaching for this gadget more often their smartphone.

The Cons: Although its 24.4MP and APS-C sensor gives the camera great image quality, the auto-focus for video is not great, especially compared to the other action cameras presented on the list. Aside from that, the shooting modes and settings are pretty basic and the battery capacity doesn’t boast a very long lifespan, but like the Insta360, you can always buy extra rechargeable batteries.

The Verdict: Although the Ricoh GR IIIx is more limiting than most DSLRs, it is certainly more compact. It also boasts sharp images in high resolution and high contrast in 35mm format, although its auto-focus doesn’t perform well on video, which may be a deal breaker for those on the market for vlogging cameras.

Best waterproof headphones for swimming

Single lane swimming is tedious, especially if you’re lapping up for exercise. Just as music helps you lift harder and stronger in the gym, your favourite tunes have the same impact under water in every lap and tumble turn. And now thanks to refined technology, you can take a dip, dive or somersault in water with a slew of new waterproof headphones. Scroll below for our edit of the best underwater headphones, we’ve got purse-pleasing options as well.

Buyer’s Guide: What is IP and IPX rating?

Not all waterproof headphones are made equal. As good as they are as sweat-proof and washable accessories, it might not always be the case underwater. Most waterproof headphones with a protective case rating of IPX6 or below are only able to withstand underwater conditions for up to 3-feet and 30-minute or less duration. However, if you are in the market for an audio accessory to enjoy music, audiobooks and podcast episodes in the pool or in open water, a pair of waterproof headphones with a rating of IPX7 (waterproof) and above or IP67 (waterproof and dust-proof) will serve as a reliable and durable option.

Hiking, Trail Running, Rock Climbing: The best shoes for all kinds of terrain

After a week of gloomy, rather Scandinavian weather, the sun is finally peeking bright and we’re hoping for a balmy weekend ahead. Setting off on the trails, or pounding the pavements – a strenuous outdoor activity keeping Covid restrictions and the right footwear mind, sounds like just the kind of endorphins we need.

Hiking, trail running or climbing gafencu definitive guide to choosing the right outdoor footwear (5)
(Photo: Hoka One One)

1. Getting the right size

Making sure you have the right size shoe to run or hike in is essential to keeping the feet healthy and comfortable. A common mistake people make is getting a size that matches the length of their feet. Professionals recommend getting shoes a half or full size up to give the toes a comfortable wiggle room, especially since the feet expands as we run. An easy way to tell if you’ve got the right size on is making sure you have a thumb size or two finger size gap from the shoes to your toes and your heel.

2. Choose your shoes according to your trail

Choosing a pair of hiking boots or trail running shoes depends on your objective and trail. A few things to consider: the distance, the terrain and how heavy the load on your back will be. This will determine the right type of footwear for your trail. For example, hiking boots typically have durable outers, rigid soles and high cuts to provide support to the ankles, while also protecting the toes and soles of the feet on rough and rocky terrain in case you trip or slip. On the other hand, casual day hikes or paved paths don’t need high durability and would be a more comfortable experience in lighter shoes made with breathable and flexible material for optimum comfort.

3. Consider how much support or protection you will need

If you are ambitious about tackling challenging slopes, trekking upstream or climbing over rocky terrain, it is crucial to consider how much support, protection and flexibility you will need on your adventure. For easy to moderate flat surfaced hikes, a pair of lightweight, low-cut trail running shoes will offer more flexibility in movement because of its light and springy build. Meanwhile high-cut hiking boots are best fit to serve those trekking unstable trails with loose rocks; they provide good grip and support on the soles and around the ankles, especially for those who are prone to ankle injuries and need the extra support.

4. How heavy is your backpack?

Another thing to consider before picking out a pair of shoes for your adventure is to consider the weight of your load or backpack. With camping becoming a popular hobby for many Hongkongers, particularly for photography enthusiasts, hiking uphill with a full gear can be cumbersome and take a toll on your soles for supporting a lot of the heavy lifting. In this case, hiking shoes (not boots), which are a cross between hiking boots and trail running shoes, provide the lightness and flexibility of trail running shoes while adding stiffer and thicker soles for more comfort and protection.

(Photo: Hoka One One)

5. Waterproof is not always best

Contrary to what most people believe, waterproof shoes aren’t necessarily always best for hiking – depending on where you’re going. We say this if you are going on long hikes, your feet are likely to expand and sweat. Breathable materials – preferably mesh – will allow air to flow out through the material, keeping the feet cool and comfortable. However, if you are hiking in water or canyoning, waterproof shoes that have shallow lugs (keeping close contact to the ground) with good grip and flexible material will ensure your feet and you safe and protected.

Here’s what makes ❛oud❜ more expensive than gold!

Forget frankincense, and patchouli is so last century. Jasmine? Well, that’s just mundane. There’s a surprising five-star ingredient in the world of luxury scents that has been wafting into the Western consciousness of late. It is intense enough to stir the most jaded nose, and sufficiently surreal to intrigue non-traditionalists. Rich, woody, soft yet smoky; astoundingly rare, exotically precious and more expensive than gold – please give it up for oud.

Fragrance is subjective, yet oud (pronounced ‘oodh’) is the universal, lingering combination of luxury, fantasy and passion, blurring the line between great and extraordinary. Often described as “the scent from heaven” or “liquid gold”, it was ignored by the European master perfumers for thousands of years, but it’s once hidden sensuality is now finally etched in the scent-makers’ palette. Giving a modern spin to this old-world ingredient, they are experimenting with notes and creating strangely irresistible, singular, exclusive and sometimes startling blends.

The Trail of Scent: From Tom Ford to MFK

The scent was first introduced to the Western world by designer Tom Ford in 2007 in his Oud Wood perfume. As Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie in Harrods, London, where the initial collection was showcased, put it:

“Tom Ford creates the most directional fragrances; where he leads, others follow.”

They were right: Jo Malone, Christian Dior, Armani Privé and Maison Francis Kurkdjian tapped into the trend and oud soon became mainstream – if that’s the right word for something so rarefied. The prospect of getting under people’s skin and bagging a share of the fragrance industry’s massive US$31 billion year-on-year revenue stream led to the bottling of an enticing number of such rich, woody, smoky and sensual perfumes.

Visionary French master perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, who boasts a keen understanding of how raw ingredients behave, finds oud fascinating. He’s drawn to its animalistic notes, finding it “a wild beast (yet) to be tamed”. So, what exactly is oud – where does it come from, and what makes it one of the most expensive fragrance ingredients known to the human nose?

Smells like Money
Not a pretty plant, oud is Arabic for wood and is derived exclusively from the agar, a tree in the evergreen Aquilaria family. When the heartwood of agar is infected with a specific type of mould, it oozes a sticky, scented resin to protect itself from the parasitic infection. The oil from this resin – oud or agarwood – is extremely precious. There is nothing quite like it in the olfactory world – dark, sensual and intense, kilo for kilo it is more expensive than gold but strangely it’s just an incredibly aromatic anti-fungal!

“The scent has a fruity facet … and a very waxy side. It’s potent animal inflection is powerful, persistent and very special”

The main reason oud is so expensive is its rarity; not every tree gets infected with mould and thus emits the rich resin. For reasons still unknown to science, only some two to seven percent of wild agar trees produce this gooey ‘gold’, and experts claim the very best oud comes from the oldest trees, which are even more scant. Lower quality oud may cost about US$5,000 per kilogram, but the finest variety of Cambodian oud can easily command beyond 10 times that price. But price is directly proportional to ageing – a decade ago, an anonymous collector gave US$7,000 for barely half a teaspoon of pure oud oil made in 1982 for Sultan Qaboos of Oman from 100-year-old agarwood trees.

History of Agarwood
Writings from the Tang and Song Dynasties show agarwood was a valued commodity in China. Its intoxicating scent was revered across religions and there is evidence of it being extracted for fragrance in Vietnam as early as the third century A.D.
Renowned for his heady, enchanting perfumes, Kurkdjian travelled to Laos and Cambodia to source a “very specific type of oud, aged for 15 years and harvested with the strictest quality standards”. The scent, which infuses the maison’s Oud eau de parfum, has “a very fruity facet, reminiscent of peach and saffron, and has a very waxy side. Its potent animal inflection is powerful, persistent and very special.”

From Assam (India) to Middle East – Thirst for Gold
Oud possesses a cultural significance in the Middle East that is hard for outsiders to grasp. When burned in the house to welcome guests, wafts of the delicious, musky aroma linger in a precious, purified trail. Gifted to wives, bosses and friends, each chip of agarwood tells a different scented story, encapsulating the culture and life of Arabs. There is no such olfactory parallel in the Western realm.

Ode to Oud agard wood fragrance perfume gafencu 8

Oud worn in the Middle East smells very different from the scent that infuses today’s Western perfumes. Abdulla Ajmal, third-generation scion of the Ajmal Perfumes family of India, says that foreign perfumers douse the earthiness of oud by blending it with the likes of patchouli, jasmine, bergamo, green neroli and tuberose. Traditionally in the Arab world, the liquid gold stands on its own as an essential oil.

Ajmal Perfumes, which moved to Dubai in the 1970s, has long sourced its high-quality agarwood chips from Assam, India. With rising demand and scarce supply, industry players keep tight-lipped about the exact location of the aromatic wood. “Everyone has their sources and they’re protective about them,” says Ajmal. “Only dealers on the ground know where the wild Aquilaria forests exist and haven’t yet been destroyed.”

“Only dealers on the ground know where the wild Aquilaria forests exist and haven’t yet been destroyed”

The chance occurrence of resin formation has led to considerable swathes of Aquilaria trees being destroyed. One can’t look at a tree and tell if its trunk is infected with oud, so farmers chop them down in the hope of extracting huge rewards. This has gone on for centuries, leaving the tree endangered in most Southeast Asian countries.

Ode to Oud agard wood fragrance perfume gafencu 3

As the stock of 100-year-old agarwood borders on extinction, several perfumers have established their own plantations. When the tree reaches maturity, it is injected with the artificial bacterium to cultivate oud. Chemically, the experiment is a success, though Ajmal says this fragrance pales in comparison to what his grandfather could gather a few decades ago.

The staggering shortage has prompted some fragrance houses to turn to synthetic, lab-made oud, but it’s not an easy substance to mimic. Ajmal notes, you can smell the “cheap, artificial stuff from 50 feet”. It is, indeed, not the rich, woody, smoky, animalistic scent we have come to treasure.
