Fashion Asia 2017

Hong Kong Design Centre recently hosted Fashion Asia 2017 as part of the annual Business of Design Week (BODW). Showcasing ‘Asia’s 10 top designers to watch for in 2017’ and featuring a talk on ‘Fashion Challenges’ by the top names in the industry, the event was a most comprehensive guide to Asia’s top fashion trends and directions.

The exhibition, running from 5 to 12 December at PMQ, showed the work of some of Asia’s top outstanding talents. Those who made it to the top of the list are: The World is Your Oyster and Yat Pit from Hong Kong; Helen Lee, Masha Ma, SHUSHU/TONG, Simon Gao and Ximon Lee from China; Christian Dada and Sulvam from Japan; and Sirloin from Japan and Sweden.

Fashion Asia

The panel discussion on Fashion Challenges saw fashion moguls from all walks of the industry coming together to discuss the opportunities and challenges that face the fashion industry today.

Vivienne Tam, fashion designer; Jimmy Choo, footwear fashion designer; Ann-Sofie Johansson, creative advisor, H&M; Caroline Issa, CEO, TANK Group; Sophie Brocart, senior vice president of Fashion Ventures, LVMH; were among the 40 international speakers who addressed current issues such as the continual rise of China, the digital transformation of retail and collaboration beyond fashion.

Ann-Sofie Johansson

One of the most-discussed topics at Fashion Asia was sustainable fashion. We caught up with Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s chief creative advisor, to learn more. According to her, “To continue successful business models, fashion needs to take the leap into the future and embrace sustainability. We want to lead the change at H&M with our vision of fulfilling our sustainability goals by 2040. The key is collaboration and innovation”. To this end, H&M Foundation has already come up with an innovation to recycle blended textiles, in collaboration with The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA).

One thing was clearly revealed at Fashion Asia 2017. Fashion is at the cusp of embracing some huge changes in the coming decades with more emphasis on sustainability, gender and body positivity and increasing importance of online retail. Fashion, as we know it, is changing and Asian fashion is definitely in the limelight.

Round-the-clock Fashion: Add a touch of suaveness to your routine with Ermenegildo Zegna’s new collection

Italian luxury menswear brand, Ermenegildo Zegna, recently hosted a cocktail party titled ‘Crafting Modernity’ at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. Through an informal interactive session, guests were given a walk-through of the meticulous processes and the latest technologies that the atelier uses to ensure best quality.

The top draws of the event were the brand’s iconic PELLE TESSUTA Leather Collection and the Zegna Toyz Collection. For the PELLE TESSUTA collection, Ermenegildo Zegna has imitated the traditional method of weaving clothes onto leather by using thin strips of nappa leather, giving the leather goods a refined, layered-textured finish.

The party also saw the launch of the Zegna Toyz Collection in Hong Kong. Featuring a wide range of home, travel and gaming products, the items take care of three crucial aspects of a modern gentleman’s life. “Essential” features leather accessories suited for professional life, like coin cases, business card cases, sunglass holders, etc., while “Toys”, with its selection of travel games, like domino sets, playing cards, etc., provide the perfect distraction for ‘down’ times, in between long-haul flights, for an evening at the club and so on. The “Technological” collection, created in collaboration with Master & Dynamic, a premium audio brand, includes a series of multimedia must-haves like headphones and turntables.

Celebrities such as Sean Lau, Moses Chan, Tim Wong and Alfred Hui attended the party to show their support for the brand.

Giuseppe Zanotti’s new concept boutique celebrated by famous fans

Luxury Italian shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti unveiled his latest concept store at Hong Kong’s ifc mall. The exclusive opening night saw over 300 notable guests in attendance, including Giuseppe Zanotti, himself.

Korean actor Lee Dong Wook and award-winning lyricist Wyman Wong were just two famous personalities in attendance. Local celebs and socialites also turned up to support the store, including Maria Zhuge, William Lok, Virginia Yung, Carmen Yim, Elly Lam, Mimi Kung, Erica Tsui and more.

Four famous Hong Kong talents showcased their interpretation of the brand through various mediums for guests to enjoy on this special occasion.

Limited edition tote bags featuring Zanotti’s own portrait from fashion illustrator Mickco Chan were on show amid creative floral displays by Gary Kwok that highlighted the brand’s footwear. Guests nibbled on Zanotti-inspired culinary creations whipped up by Michelin-star chef Vicky Lau as they enjoyed a carefully curated soundtrack from DJ Arthur Bray throughout the evening.

Paradise Regained: Jaquet Droz’s new watch creates a mini Garden of Eden

Known for its elaborate decorative watches, Jaquet Droz has once again stunned the world of horology with its latest model, The Tropical Bird Repeater watch.

Inspired by Gauguin’s Post-Impressionist paintings, the watch depicts, on its dial, an exotic landscape, a Garden of Eden-like terrain, with each detail of flora and fauna depicted painstakingly.

At the heart of this Garden of Eden, amidst a realistic waterfall, is a hummingbird hand-carved and hand-engraved with meticulous craftsmanship by the maison’s top artists. A one-of-a-kind animation in watch-making history, its wings beat up to forty times a second, making it a piece of moving art. All other details, including a peacock, whose plumes open and close, a toucan that emerges at 3 o’clock to open its beak, a flight of dragonflies, whose wings glow in the dark, are equally jaw-dropping.

The timepiece is, however, not just a great looker; it’s high on performance as well. With features like the minute repeater powered by Jaquet Droz RMA89 movement and a power reserve of 60 hours with an oscillating frequency of 3 Hz, the watch is a collectible on all counts.

Limited to just eight pieces, this is one paradise a true connoisseur can’t afford to lose!

Opening of Valentino’s new VLTN pop-up draws city’s elite

Valentino’s Resort Collection 2018 VLTN store is the latest pop-up to take up residence in Hong Kong’s popular ifc mall.

That the shop has a distinctly urban jungle-meets-sporty vibe is not an accident. Valentino’s new Resort Collection 2018 is heavily inspired by both athletics and ‘active underground’ spaces.

Korean singer Sehun Oh, Hong Kong actress Kelly Chen, Japanese model Lala Takahashi and local high jump star Cecilia Yeung were all spotted at the store’s opening cocktail reception. They were joined by Pakho Chau, Karena Ng, Fish Liu, Jennifer Yu, and more.
