Here is your September 2023 Horoscope
Mercury may be in retrograde this September but that is not going to change the fact that this Virgo season will be filled with exciting opportunities. Moreover, as Venus retrograde ends on September 4, you can also expect to see your love life take a better turn. Read your September 2023 horoscope to know what this Virgo season has in store for your star sign.
VIRGO (23 August – 22 September)
Born under the Virgo star sign, you are great at thinking with practicality and logic. While this has made you appear less compassionate around others, this September, some incidents will change the way people perceive you. They will begin to appreciate your thought process and even ask for your opinions and actually take them seriously.
While this sudden change, especially from your partner, may confuse you at the beginning, you should try not to overthink and go with the flow. Your needless suspicions can only have a negative impact but accepting them could benefit your relationship. So, though it may be in your nature to think critically, it is best to set aside that characteristic of yours, at least for the time being.
LIBRA (23 September – 22 October)
While your past self might have felt discouraged by the many hurdles you have to overcome to taste victory, you are more mature now, so you understand that success does not come easily. This month, you will find happiness in knowing that you have put in your best efforts in the things you do. (Libra of the Month: Atthaphan Phunsawat, Thai Actor, 4 October 1993)
SCORPIO (23 October – 21 November)
September could turn out to be the most exciting month for you, as you will find yourself involved in projects that you are highly passionate about. In fact, a certain person may be amazed by your expertise and give you an opportunity to advance in your career. If it feels right, just go for it, Scorpio. (Scorpio of the Month: Ryan Gosling, Canadian Actor, 12 November 1980)
Sagittarius (22 November – 21 December)
You are feeling a sense of despair but now is the time to stay optimistic, Sagittarius. Life can be more exciting for you if you learn to pay attention to the new beginnings in life rather than pondering over what has ended. September is the right time for you to unwind and focus on your health and personal life before you become busy. (Sagittarius of the month: Sebastian Croft, British Actor, 16 December 16)
CAPRICORN (22 December – 19 January)
Given the planetary alignment this month, you will find September to be less exciting but you may not be very concerned about feeling bored on some days. Your priorities will completely lie in knowing that you have passed each month without any troubles and that you were not involved in any minor or major arguments. (Capricorn of the Month: Kim Taehyung, South Korean Idol, 30 December 1995)
Aquarius (20 January – 18 February)
You will come across a couple of hurdles that would initially discourage you from continuing to work towards your goals. Do not let those minor troubles stop you from focusing on your aspirations because when you see the bigger picture, these recent obstacles will have actually taught you some valuable lessons. (Aquarius of the Month: Tom Hiddleston, British Actor, 9 February 1981)
PISCES (19 February – 20 March)
Communication is going to be the most vital thing for you, Pisces. Whether it is at work or at home, reminding yourself and letting the people around you know what your true feelings are, will help you and the people around you to resolve issues. September brings you the opportunity to fix any past misunderstandings. (Pisces of the Month: Emily Blunt, British Actress, 23 February 1983)
ARIES (21 March – 19 April)
You may feel like there is something holding you back, not allowing you to go ahead and do the things you planned. Such intuitions are mostly just in your thoughts. Learn to put your self-confidence in the forefront and it will be easy for you to see significant progress in your life, but try not to get overconfident because that might just work negatively for you. (Aries of the Month: Jim Parsons, American Actor, 24 March 1973)
TAURUS (20 April – 20 May)
Now is the right time to look at events from this year and reevaluate your past which may give you an awakening that will encourage you to look forward to a better future. If you have been procrastinating certain discussions to avoid conflicts, September will make it easy to have such difficult conversations. (Taurus of the Month: Andria Tayeh, Jordanian Model, 9 May 2001)
GEMINI (21 May – 20 June)
Previously, you might have reclined from chatting with strangers in fear of being judged or coming off as unlikable. But, this month, you will let go of that shyness and find yourself networking with new people and focusing on growing your career. Besides, you do know how to talk in a way that impresses everyone. (Gemini of the Month: Troye Sivan, South African Singer, 5 June 1995)
CANCER (21 June – 22 July)
In the last couple of weeks, you were probably focusing on all the things that are missing from your life and that has only made you feel low. Fortunately, your stars are pushing you to be more optimistic and look at all the simple yet great things that you have overlooked recently. Sometimes, bliss comes from within you, Cancer. (Cancer of the Month: Camila Queiroz, Brazilian Actress, 27 June 1993)
Leo (23 July – 22 August)
September may feel more stressful than you expected it to be, so planning out in advance and following a strict schedule will be both necessary and beneficial for you, Leo. Your proper time management may even make the last week of September much more relaxed and raise your desire to go on a weekend trip to a new destination. (Leo of the Month: Dulquer Salmaan, Indian actor, 28 July 1983)
What’s on? Things to do this September in Hong Kong
Make September more fun and entertaining with all the cultural events ranging from comedy shows to plays and art exhibitions to Mid-Autumn festivities that are taking place this month. With Hong Kong bringing a plethora of things to add to your calendar, Gafencu has picked the ones you should not absolutely miss.
La Finta Giardiniera
Even those who are not well versed in classical music will know of Mozart, and despite centuries having passed since his short but prolific life, he will never be forgotten as long as his compositions are played. On that note, Musica Viva is bringing Mozart’s three-act comedy La Finta Giardiniera to the stage. Composed by the Austrian musical genius in 1775 when he was only 18, this is an opera with a plot that will have you hooked. From a libretto by Giuseppe Petrosellini, the complicated romantic tale sees multiple players disguise their identities in quests for love and revenge.
Hong Kong star Andy Lau is popularly known as an actor, singer and producer. He now adds another string to his bow of creative achievements with an art exhibition. For the first time, Lau has collaborated with various artists to create works that reflect his triumphant and longstanding career in the entertainment industry, while also diving deep into his thoughts and emotions. For this purpose,1/X will bring forth different art forms including painting, sculpture and calligraphy.

Much heralded and long anticipated, The Actor is Present has arrived in Hong Kong after being previously showcased in New York, Seoul, Busan, Shanghai and Beijing. The fan-favourite photo exhibition features portraits of 200 award-winning South Korean actors – 100 female and 100 male stars – who have had an impact on the industry. The photo gallery also aims to narrate their individual stories. The famous faces you can admire at the gallery include Jung Hae In, Lee Seung Gi, Kim Go Eun, Park Bo Young and many more besides.

Combining ink art by Taiwanese master Tong Yang-Tze and new media art techniques from Hong Kong’s Chris Cheung (h0nh1m), Ink | Pulse is a vibrant, interactive exhibition that shows ink painting in a new and interesting manner. For this purpose, 100 ink and calligraphy pieces produced while Tong was working on her Silent Music series were collected and digitalised to create generative art, capturing each stroke and the weight of the brush on the canvas. Simultaneously, the art show also focuses on addressing the artistic and philosophical significance of ink painting.
If you love to spend a night out laughing your socks off after a hectic day at work, this show might be right up your alley. Former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Miz Cracker flies into town for one night to perform her one-person comedy show, A Brief History of the Entire World…and also me! Fire Dragon Dances
Hong Kong is in full celebratory mode during the Mid-Autumn festival, but apart from heading to the beach or the park to sit and gaze at the moon, do not miss one of the most colourful traditions at this time of year – the fire dragon dance. This centuries-old ritual sees a fire dragon being constructed of bamboo and straw and paraded loudly through the village streets to banish bad luck. The best fire dragon dances include those held annually in Tai Hang Village in Causeway Bay and Pok Fu Lam Village. Join the parade and immerse yourself in the spectacle of Hong Kong’s traditions and culture.

Voyager: The Never-Ending Journey 3D
In 1977, two space probes – Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 – were sent to outer space to better acquaint us with our solar system, a mission achieved through the precise images of the universe they captured and transferred to Earth. If you want a quick and fun way to travel into space (at least through your imagination), then include this 3D dome show in your schedule this month. Voyager: The Never-Ending Journey highlights key moments from the decades-long expedition, including closer looks at Saturn’s rings and Jupiter.
Despite debuting only one year ago, K-pop sensation Le Sserafim has already earned global phenomenon status due to hit (and easily stuck in your mind) songs like Antifragile. Last month, the talented five-member female group kicked off their first tour. After performances in South Korea and Japan, they will land in Hong Kong, so local Le Sserafim fans – the Fearnot brigade – can get their light sticks ready and look forward to hours of singing along with excitement.
Ministering Angel: Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre & Hong Kong Ballet champion Anne Wang Liu does all she can from the heart
“Super Speed!” proclaims Anne Wang Liu when asked which superhuman ability she would choose. A self-proclaimed multitasker, she has mastered the art of operating at speed as she juggles motherhood and her life passions one day at a time.
Despite her glamorous appearance – arriving in a monochromatic light-brown and skin-tone semi-formal ensemble, high block-heeled pumps in the same colour tone, jewellery from her own accessory line and gleaming black locks in relaxed big curls – more than anything she seems a diligent, efficient mum making sure everything is under control. We meet on a highly changeable summer’s day – beautifully clear at first, then gloomy and raining – a weather pattern that locals proudly claim is unique to Hong Kong. Yet for Wang Liu, it’s all about perspectives.
“Ah, the weather! One of the few things in life we people cannot control, right?” she says, as she smiles brightly and poses for the camera despite raindrops splattering her yellow garden dress. “That’s the thing, whatever circumstance we are put into, it’s about making things work and overcoming it.”
Raised on the outskirts of New York City, young Anne completed an economics degree at Cornell University, then embarked on a career in finance. She has contributed her planning abilities to a number of causes since she and her husband, Julian Liu – whom she met at college – moved to Hong Kong two decades ago, including Hong Kong Ballet and Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre, which marks its 10th anniversary here.
Caring Spirit
Wang Liu is a familiar face of the city’s social scene and one of the most well-loved Hong Kong socialites. Apart from being blessed with impeccable style, her vibrant personality makes her easy to like. Joining the Board of Governors of Maggie’s nine years ago reflected her selflessness and determination to give back to the community.
“When I first became involved with Maggie’s, I had friends and family who were fighting cancer and I felt that Hong Kong lacked the facilities that were needed to support patients,” she says. “Yes, we have the doctors, but social support is very important in fighting the disease. Maggie’s has a multidisciplinary team, including oncology specialists, social workers, clinical psychologists and registered dietitians to provide free, practical, emotional and psychosocial support to people touched by cancer.”
By peeling off the layers to unveil her rawness, Wang Liu moves beyond the superficiality of being judged by how she might dress for events or appear on the social pages of magazines. She goes deeper by nurturing the inside – a mindset that reveals her beautiful soul.
Fayre of Heart
The first Maggie’s opened in Edinburgh in 1996 as a new type of care centre that would make the experience of cancer more manageable for everyone. It was conceived by the late Maggie Keswick Jencks – who had spent her early years in Hong Kong – following the return of her breast cancer. The Hong Kong centre was built in the grounds of Tuen Mun Hospital in 2013 with the support of the Keswick Foundation.
As she explains, it does not have government funding and depends solely on grants and donations to continue its work: “We have an upcoming event in December, the Fayre of St John’s, with all proceeds from individuals and businesses going to cancer patients and their families. I am involved very much as the fundraising committee co-chair to raise public awareness and funds for the event.
“Ultimately, the aim is to ensure that Maggie’s has the resources it needs to provide high-quality care and support to people affected by cancer. The fundraiser brings families together for a night of song and gives a face to those suffering from cancer,” she adds.
Strength All-Around
As we shoot the third look, the production team is fanning an ethereal goddess-like green gown with long trails on the shoulder to give an angelic wing effect for the photos. Humming the chorus of Bette Midler’s Wind Beneath My Wings in between makeup touch-ups, our equally angelic model reiterates the fact that a strong support system plays a crucial part in life.
“My parents taught me the need for a parent to always support their children’s emotional well-being and to create an environment where my children feel safe and confident,” she says.
“My parents provided me with the opportunity to engage in many different activities. I led an active childhood, participating in sports, dance, music, student government and community service. They allowed me to pursue my personal and intellectual curiosity. Moreover, they taught me the importance of close familial ties and having a supportive group of friends.”
Acing Motherhood
It’s a philosophy she applied while raising her two daughters, Madeline and Audrey. Despite her busy schedule, she finds time to be the cool mum she wants her kids to have. Just days before the shoot, she scored much-coveted Taylor Swift Eras Tour concert tickets for the three of them.
“It was crazy! Super” she shares excitedly, the way one would with teenage peers. “I made sure we got the chance to watch Taylor Swift because both of my girls are huge fans. And now, I am too.”
When asked how old her daughters are now, she laughs quickly and says: “Next question.” Still chuckling, she proudly continues to tell her story about motherhood and how she managed to raise them just the way she wanted it to be.
“I am focused on teaching them what’s right and wrong, and luckily, they’ve turned out to be quite self-motivated. So, I don’t need to guide them as much anymore. Things are now reversed and they are guiding me,” she says.
Ballet Benefits
Exemplifying her belief in giving back to the community and helping the next generation, as co-chair of the Hong Kong Ballet Guild, she devotes her time to making the artform accessible to youngsters from different backgrounds. The annual Nutcracker Christmas Benefit, a fundraising event she considers to be one of her most significant career accomplishments, holds a special place in her heart as both her daughters have performed numerous roles over the years.
“I have watched them grow up on the stage,” she says. “Self-expression in performing arts is paramount. It allows individuals to convey emotions, stories and perspectives uniquely. This creative outlet fosters personal growth, empathy and cultural understanding, enriching both the artist and the audience. It’s a vital means of connecting and communicating in a diverse world.”
As she journeys through life learning about what she loves and embracing every moment of it, she knows that it’s a continuous process.
“My mother and sister have been a constant source of inspiration and support. Both are professional working moms that have been able to balance careers while raising a family. My children have been a constant inspiration and remind me to stay curious, adventurous and young at heart.”
We finish the shoot and interview, typically a four-hour marathon, in just 90 minutes, and she moves seamlessly into discussions with Maggie’s staff to finalise their upcoming event. While she may not possess the superhuman power of super speed, she truly does a lot and always from the heart. Anne Wang Liu has a million obligations, personal and professional, and she gets an A+ for them all.

Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and Salon de TE commence
Certain to attract watch enthusiasts and industry players from around the world, the 42nd HKTDC Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and 11th Salon de TE commence in early September at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). Organisers are bringing new elements and themes to this year’s gathering.
The parallel events are jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Ltd. and The Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades and Industries Ltd. More than 700 global exhibitors from 17 countries and regions are anticipated.
Under the EXHIBITION+ hybrid mode, the physical fair will run from 5 to 9 September at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). Salon de TE will open its doors to both industry buyers and the public on the final two days (8 and 9 September). From 29 August to 16 September, exhibitors and buyers from across the world can engage in online and offline meetings through the AI-powered Click2Match smart business-matching platform.
Globally significant fair
According to Sophia Chong, HKTDC Deputy Executive Director, the globally renowned Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair has consistently served as an effective platform for the industry to secure orders and establish business connections. This is especially the case given the fact that Hong Kong remains the world’s largest wristwatch import market and the second-largest wristwatch export market, following Switzerland, she highlighted.
Chong also pointed out that the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair exhibits are more diversified this year to serve changing industry needs. “This year also welcomes a first-time exhibitor from Greece and Dubai, and will feature Guangdong, Guangzhou and Taiwan pavilions, hoping to create business opportunities for the industry,” she said.
The Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair includes several key zones. The Pageant of Eternity zone showcases OEM and ODM high-end complete watches. Other product zones cover clocks, machinery and equipment, parts and components, packaging, and trade services.
Five themes at Salon de TE
Salon de TE, dedicated to showcasing internationally renowned watch brands, will feature five thematic zones: World Brand Piazza, Chic & Trendy, Craft Treasure, Renaissance Moment, and Wearable Tech. These zones will present more than 130 prominent watch brands and designer collections from France, Switzerland, Italy, the United States and more.
The debut Guo Chao theme welcomes several remarkable mainland independent watchmakers and watch designs. They will showcase timepieces that intricately blend Chinese cultural elements. Ma XuShu, an independent watchmaker from Mainland China, will present his masterpiece Starry Night wristwatch. Another watchmaker Wei Guang Wen will showcase Guangzhou clocks, a timepiece of historical, cultural and artistic value.
Swiss Independent Watchmaking Pavilion (SIWP) and Francéclat are returning this year, together with a debut by the International Luxury Group, presenting a range of Swiss and international watch brands.
Sponsored by Prince Jewellery & Watch for the 13th consecutive year, the World Brand Piazza zone remains a fair highlight. This year it will feature a lineup of 10 international watch brands and will showcase an exclusive selection of luxurious and rare timepieces.
The Wearable tech zone this year has tripled its exhibiting area compared to 2019, displaying a series of smartwatches and the latest technology brands, including Microwear, DTNO.1, DO and MYZI etc.
Other international timepiece brands will present wristwatches of different styles and personalities. This includes a limited-edition Mermaid Tourbillon by Hong Kong brand Memorigin, with just 100 pieces worldwide. First-time exhibitor King-Wear from Mainland China will feature one-touch Bluetooth pairing for calls, built-in music and video playback, body identification sensors and more than 100 sports modes. Young watchmaker Ricky (see below), cultivated by Hong Kong brand ANPASSA, has made his own tourbillon, a creative work described as a 15-year-old dream.
Networking opportunities
In addition to EXHIBITION+, the fair will also launch the Scan2Match function, which brings communication from offline to online. Buyers can use the HKTDC Marketplace app to scan exhibitors’ QR codes during the exhibition period, bookmark their favourite exhibitors, browse product information and the e-Floor plan, and continue to chat with exhibitors online during or after the exhibition period, extending their sourcing journey.
Seminars
Forums, seminars, watch parades and networking events will provide first-hand market information. At the Hong Kong International Watch Forum on 5 September will discuss the global trade situation and industry trends.
Global market research agency Euromonitor International will discuss sustainable watch design development around this year’s theme “Shaping the Future Watch: The Next Design Trends” at the Asian Watch Conference on 6 September.
On the same day, Noel Wong, a watch collector, and William Bai, a watch culture expert and founder of Watch Traveler, will discuss affordable luxury watch prospects, a hot topic among celebrities.
To cultivate a new generation of watch designers and technical talents and promote the innovation and development of watch design, the HKTDC, Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Ltd and Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Ltd have jointly organised the 40th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition.
The competition has two categories – The Beauty of Perspective for the Open Group and Game Code for the Student Group. Artist Jessica Hsuan was invited as a guest judge this year. Award-winning works and finalists will be exhibited during the Watch & Clock Fair, and the award ceremony will be held on 9 September at the Infinite Galaxy in Hall 3FG of the fairground.
Events, lucky draws, shopping discounts
Activities at Salon de TE (open to the public aged 12 and above) will include watch parades, watch and painting demonstrations, embroidery watch crafts, product launches and more. Visitors can participate in lucky draws, with prizes including luxury watches, fashion accessories, dining vouchers and more. They can also join Smart Bidding to bid on their desired watches starting at as much as 90% off the retail price. Some exhibits will be available for on-the-spot sale.
In addition, Asia’s premier fashion event CENTRESTAGE will be held from 6 to 9 September at the HKCEC, assembling designer brands from around the world to create synergies. Visitors can view the latest products of more than 350 watch and fashion brands at the same time.
Dorelan’s premium-quality beds are trusted by different sectors including hospitality, travel and sports
Certain factors are crucial for leading a healthy and active lifestyle, and Dorelan understands that sleep is definitely one of them. That is why the Italian brand has paid great attention to creating scientifically-backed comfortable mattresses, thus drastically improving the well-being and the sleep culture of people who use a Dorelan bed.
For this, Dorelan has gone to great lengths to ensure that each of their bedding product is only of the highest quality. Even after that, the Italian bedding brand, with more than five decades of history, continues to make improvements by introducing new materials, ergonomic designs and state-of-the-art technologies while simultaneously marrying science and art in its production process.
Stressing on its determination to make the best beds, it only works with suppliers and people who share its passion for delivering perfection. Dorelan finds it important to impress and maintain its high standards for all its customers from different sectors such as the ones below.
Hotelier World
Whether it is for a vacation or a business trip, people want their hotel beds to be extremely comfortable so it is not hard to believe that over 10,000 clients from the hospitality industry have opted for Dorelan beds in their hotels and other premium accommodations. Besides, a room with a high-quality bed like Dorelan’s is undoubtedly going to receive appreciation from the hotel guests.
Cruise World
Another industry that strives for luxury and convenience is the cruising world, and many cruise companies, like MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises and Ponant have also included Dorelan mattresses in their ships so that their travellers can enjoy a well-rested sleep during the voyage. In addition to the fact that Dorelan beds follow a deluxe level of cosiness, the bedding also maintains high levels of hygiene thus satisfying even the most demanding passengers on the fleet.
Sports World
Getting a good night’s rest is even more important for sportspeople because they have to sleep well to recover their muscles and joints so that they can start the day with more energy and more ready to compete. Understanding all this and combining it with statistics that Dorelan found following discussions with athletes, players, doctors and trainers, the mattress brand is able to provide excellent beds that are ideal for sportspersons. Dorelan was chosen as the bedding supplier for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in the Italian city of Torino.
Dyson launches new Dyson HEPA Big+Quiet Formaldehyde BP06 purifier that is ideal for large indoor commercial spaces
Dyson steps up its air purifier game with its new Dyson HEPA Big+Quiet Formaldehyde BP06 purifier which is more powerful and quiet than its previous creations. Built to be used in indoor spaces like offices, the new Dyson air purifier is engineered with avant-garde technologies for commercial use that enable the gadget to work with high efficiency without making much noise. Below are some aspects that help the Dyson HEPA Big+Quiet Formaldehyde purifier stand out.
High Airflow
The Dyson HEPA Big+Quiet Formaldehyde BP06 purifier is backed by cone aerodynamics which allows the purifier to absorb and purify 90 litres of airflow per second. This is said to be twice the rate of the previous air purifiers. Simultaneously, the machine projects purified air at a 50-degree angle thus reducing any kind of resistance to the airflow.
Purified Air
The newly launched air purifier is built with three layers of filtering technologies that ensure that the air flowing from the machine is extremely pure. These include the HEPA H13-grade particle filter, the activated carbon filter and the Dyson Selective Catalytic Oxidation (SCO) filter.
The HEPA H13-grade particle filter plays a crucial role by absorbing 99.95 per cent of the dust and allergen particles from the air. The activated carbon filter absorbs nitrogen dioxide, VOCs and other odours that usually enter the room from the outside. Taking care of harmful chemicals like the formaldehyde molecules, that are produced by things inside the room such as wallpaper, paint, carpets and more, is the SCO filter that breaks down the formaldehyde molecules into carbon dioxide and water with the help of oxygen.
Monitoring CO2 Levels
In addition to purifying air, the Dyson HEPA Big+Quiet Formaldehyde BP06 purifier has a feature that records and displays the carbon dioxide level of the room on an LCD screen. The output is colour-coded and the readings are displayed in green, yellow or red based on the CO2 levels. While green is considered safe, red indicates that the room needs some ventilation.
Low Noise
Despite all these high-powered features, you will hardly hear the air purifier as it maintains a noise level of 55.6 decibels. If you are wondering how loud is 55.6 dB, then you should note that the noise from a typical office is somewhere around 60 dB to 70 dB.
This kind of noise reduction is achieved by Dyson by adding two internal parts to the air purifier – Helmholtz cavity and labyrinth seal. The job of the Helmholtz cavity is to absorb the sound energy produced by the air purifier, while the labyrinth seal plays a role in noise reduction by reducing sound energy.

DJI has opted for a compact design that brings all the parts of the drone camera – the FPV camera, visual sensors, positioning antennas and storage card slot – into a single airframe, thus not only keeping the design simple but also taking aerodynamics into consideration so that the flight is less resistant to air. This low resistance allows the drone to reach a maximum flight speed of 10m/s and a maximum duration of 28 minutes.
Its GPS system uses Real-Time Kinematics technology with centimetre-level accuracy, ensuring that the drone can be flown more precisely. The DJI Inspire 3 offers different flight modes, among which one is the repeatable routes which allow you to take the same route repeatedly until you get the shot of your liking.
For the camera, DJI has improvised its Zenmuse X9-8K to include the newly developed image processing CineCore 3.0 which allows videos to be captured in 8K resolution. It is also integrated with the Spotlight Pro feature that enables the camera to recognise its subjects more efficiently. Available at DJI’s online store for HK$88,299.

Sleep Revived: Apparently, those who snooze win – new research suggests habitual napping enlarges the brain
Debate about the benefits of power napping has raged for years, but recent research suggests those who enjoy a daytime snooze can nod off knowing it is likely doing some good. A study conducted by UCL in the UK and the University of the Republic in Uruguay found regular catnaps can increase the size of the brain and perhaps thereby delay the ageing process.
Published in June in Sleep Health, the journal of the UK’s National Sleep Foundation, the research project considered whether there was an association between daytime napping, cognitive function and brain volume, as had been suggested by previous purely observational studies. In welcome news for nappers, its conclusions indicated a causal link between habitual power naps and larger total brain volume.
The results of this randomisation study have deepened our understanding of daytime nap frequency, cognitive function and structural brain outcomes. Yet they also highlight the need for further research. Brain areas that determine factors such as alertness may also be affected by napping. Exploring whether there is any association between catnaps and other measures of brain health and cognitive function like hippocampal volume, reaction time and visual processing is the next task for scientists.
Bigger brains
The joint university research project used data from people aged 40 to 69 and involved a gene variation measurement technique called Mendelian randomisation. Previous studies have identified 97 snippets of DNA – the genetic code with which we are born – concerned with people’s likelihood of habitual napping. Genetic data and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans drawn from more than 35,000 individuals taking part in a larger UK Biobank study were then used to compare measures of brain health and cognition of people who were genetically programmed to nap against those who were not programmed this way. Analysis suggested a larger total brain volume for those who were programmed to nap.
In an indication that regular nappers are less prone to brain shrinkage, the study found that their brains were about 15 cubic centimetres larger – the equivalent of delaying ageing in the brain by between 2.6 and 6.5 years. With good brain health comes a lower risk of dementia and other diseases.
UCL researcher Dr Victoria Garfield said their “exciting findings” suggest that everybody could potentially benefit from napping. She also pointed out that this health benefit is relatively easy to try out compared to other forms of activity often recommended to improve well-being, such as vigorous exercise. She hoped the study would reduce any stigma about taking an afternoon nap.
Napping culture
The concept of catnaps during the workday is more culturally acceptable in some parts of the world than others. Spain, for instance, has long embraced the tradition of a siesta. This is especially true in the smaller, rural communities of Andalucía and other regions where many people still eat at home and then retire for a nap in the searing afternoon heat. However, the traditional siesta is now much less common in the larger cities. Here, a regular 9 a.m.-5 p.m. routine tends to be followed, and napping is not really part of the modern career culture.
Hong Kong and China also have a napping culture. In some shops and offices, workers set up a sleeping pillow and snooze for 15 minutes or half an hour. An ex-pat British businessman who preferred not to be named said he once thought there was a power cut at a factory in China as the lights went out suddenly after lunch had been served. “Oh, no, we turn the lights out so the workers can have their nap,” he was politely informed by the foreman.
Sleeping is a fundamental component of health. An assistant professor in the Behavioural Science Group at Warwick University, Dr Mattie Toma, says that companies in the UK should consider giving their staff the chance to nap. Her own research has found that workers in India who snoozed in the afternoon were more productive, and the habit boosted levels of attention and well-being.
Past snoozers
Indeed, two of the UK’s former prime ministers were famous nappers – Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. During the Second World War, Churchill would often take a 20-minute nap in the afternoon, his “refreshment of blessed oblivion” so vital to renew his vigour. Thatcher reportedly only slept for four or five hours at night but made up for it with catnaps in the back of her official car. American presidents John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton were all known to enjoy 40 winks, though Reagan would not readily admit that he took said snoozes.
This latest research should erode any remaining stigma surrounding catnaps. Even Einstein was thought to have a power nap, and many well-being experts including British workplace stress-management guru Carole Spiers suggest that a short nap of 15 to 20 minutes is sufficient to reenergise you. According to some studies, though, having a nap too late in the afternoon may disturb your nighttime rest, so laying down tools and your head before 3 p.m. is probably ideal.
