What you didn’t know about comedian sensation Ronny Chieng

All-round entertainer Ronny Chieng has many strings to his bow. The Malaysian-born comedian and actor made his name as a wise-cracking correspondent on Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show. He also starred in movies such as Crazy Rich Asians and Marvel’s superhero frolic Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He also has his own stand-up special Asian Comedian Destroys America! All in all, a rather eclectic performer.

Seinfeld and Study

entertainment-celebrity-comedian-ronny-chieng-gafencu (4)

Ronny Xin Yi Chieng was born in Johor Bahru on 21 November 1985 – a stone’s throw from the Malaysian border with Singapore. He spent his formative years in the US state of New Hampshire before completing his secondary schooling in Singapore. He undertook his tertiary education in Australia, completing a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Melbourne, followed up by a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University in Canberra in 2012. So far, so normal.

But from a very young age, the seed of comedy was planted when he began to soak up the humour from American ’90s sit-coms. “I saw Seinfeld on TV and told my mum that would be something cool to try one day, and she was like, OK, ‘Here is a five-year-old telling me what they want to be when they grow up’ sort of thing, and what would they know, right!” says Chieng.

And then, towards the end of his graduate degree, the transformation began to take place – as his desire to make people laugh began to take hold.
“What happened was, in my final year of university in Australia, there was a campus comedy competition, and I felt like it was something I could do. I won that competition, and I kept doing it, and I couldn’t get a job in law. So, I just kept doing comedy.”

Lucky Bit

entertainment-celebrity-comedian-ronny-chieng-gafencu

Chieng didn’t have to wait long for his big break, riffing alongside The Daily Show host Trevor Noah at the Australian Comedy Festival in Melbourne in 2013. Chieng subsequently auditioned for the high-rating show and become its roving correspondent. His in-your-face style and quick-witted repartee when he accosted the average Joe in the street – mic in hand – on whatever happens to be the hottest topic of the day made him an instant hit with audiences in the US and internationally. Chieng has been a regular on the show since 2015. Despite the success, Chieng has kept his feet on the ground and is mindful of differences between the character he is portraying as correspondent and his true self.

“I’m made of dead stars, I eat a lot of fruits, and I hate peak period travel, as opposed to my character on The Daily Show, who is made of jello, eats vegan and loves camping,” observes Chieng. His role as a permanent fixture on Trevor Noah’s show prompted Chieng to move to New York with his Vietnamese-Australian sweetheart Hannah Pham, where the couple married on 9 September 2016.

Racist Furore

entertainment-celebrity-comedian-ronny-chieng-gafencu (2)

His time on The Daily Show was not without scandal. In late 2016, he become embroiled in controversy when he took umbrage with comments from Jesse Watters, who made what he considered disparaging remarks about residents in New York’s Chinatown. Chieng engaged in a strongly worded barrage against the widely watched Fox News conservative political commentator.

Chieng observed on the issue: “I think when people talk about race relations in America, they talk about African-American and white people. Asians are not often brought into the conversation. But there’s a historical legacy of issues between them. It’s hard to be like, ‘What about us?’ But we are a little underrepresented.”

On the Up

entertainment-celebrity-comedian-ronny-chieng-gafencu (6)

Controversies aside, Chieng quickly established a career in his own right and began to build an impressive list of performances in movies and on television. The first of these to make people sit up and take notice was his role in the critically acclaimed TV comedy, Ronny Chieng International Student (2017), where he essentially plays himself and explores the trials and tribulations of an Asian university student in Australia.

From here, Hollywood beckoned. Chieng scored his first significant major movie role in Crazy Rich Asians (2021), where he plays a precocious – and at times insufferable – cousin to the film’s leads, Nick Young and Astrid Leong. He continued to build his cinematic credentials and broke out with his first action role as Jay Wayne in the mega blockbuster Godzilla vs. Kong (2021).

entertainment-celebrity-comedian-ronny-chieng-gafencu-shang-chi

This was followed up in the same year with a role in the Marvel superhero extravaganza, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. This represented a major breakthrough for Asian representation in the Marvel Comics franchise. The film stars a host of Asian actors in the major roles, including Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Benedict Wong and Michelle Yeoh – of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) fame.

Chieng had a small but important role playing the character of Jon Jon in Shang-Chi and proudly drew on his Singaporean roots to flesh out the part, especially in his combination of Mandarin and English in the dialogue.

entertainment-celebrity-comedian-ronny-chieng-gafencu-netflix

“We didn’t know which (language) would play well so I just did it in both. But isn’t that exactly how we roll in Singapore, right? We just go in and out – sometimes we speak Chinese, sometimes we speak English. We just weave in and out.”

Not one to rest on his laurels, Chieng is also slated for the lead role in the soon-to-be released fantasy film, Helvellyn Edge, directed by Joah Jordan. Chieng is also keeping his comedic talons sharpened with his own Netflix stand-up special, Asian Comedian Destroys America!

Bruce Lee Watch

entertainment-celebrity-comedian-ronny-chieng-gafencu (7)

Away from the big screen, Chieng is a passionate watch collector. It’s a suitable pastime for one who relies on impeccable timing to deliver the perfect punch line. He has accumulated an impressive selection of timepieces, including a 1984 Rolex that he inherited from his late father. But Chieng’s pride and joy are his two rare Seiko 6139 Bruce Lee timepieces – so named because this watch was worn by the legendary martial arts hero in the 1960s.

Five reasons to buy from local coffee roasters and where to find them

Few things beat the pleasure of a morning cuppa, freshly roasted, grounded and brewed to rich, nutty perfection. Although a quick tap on a Nespresso machine could easily hit the right spot, there is something about fresh grounds that completes the blissful experience of a morning brew. Coffee roasters take raw coffee which comes in varying degrees of green and “cook” them in a roasting machine specially designed for coffee beans. Combining the perfect temperature and measurements of air, gas and time, roasteries are able to bring out the full, robust flavours of each coffee type.

Sourcing from local roasteries across the city, these experts not only provide the freshest options of roasted coffees, but also provide top quality and a wide range of choices that are notches above those you would find at your neighbourhood supermarket.

Making sure you always start your day right, Gafencu searched far and wide to find the local coffee roasteries to get your coffee beans freshly roasted and ensure you have your cuppa right. Check out our guide to the best local coffee roasters in the city.

1. Freshness

buy-best-local-coffee-roastery-hongkong-gafencu (8)

To those uninitiated in the art of coffee making, many might not know that coffee is at its peak flavour between 3 days to 2 weeks after it’s been roasted. Which explains why store bought — no matter the grade, quality, origin and price, never seems to give you that same satisfaction and joy that a freshly roasted, ground cup of coffee does.

2. Quality

Coffee making is a passion that gives and takes. To the coffee roasters, it is an art form, a combination of experience, expertise and calculative measurement that highlights the best flavour profile, aromatic notes and characteristics of each varietal type. To its customers, it is an aromatic pleasure and appreciation of quality and delicious notes that makes their day.

Much like sommeliers, coffee roasters use their knowledge of the wide range of variety, country of origin and altitudes, and source products small farmers that work hard to produce good quality coffee. These experts understand how best to roast the beans to bring out the full potential of each varietal — producing rich and balanced flavours.

Offering more than just your typical Arabica and Robusta at your local supermarket, coffee roasters are just as passionate about their coffees as their drinkers. They source the best quality of coffee they can afford and import from a range of different countries. At your local coffee roastery will find a slew of choices that go beyond the milder Brazilian and Colombian options, such as the fruitier Ethiopian varietal or the richer Kenyan alternative.

4. Expertise

When you visit your local roastery, you will be able to experience different types or flavors of coffee that you might not otherwise be exposed to at your local Starbucks. And with so many choices to choose from, it can be overwhelming to pick out the right one to suit your palate. Fortunately, coffee roasters are knowledgeable in all things coffee, and will happily answer your brewing qualm, from brewing techniques to grind sizes and water ratio for particular brewing methods.

5. Better for the environment

Buying roasted coffee beans from local coffee roasteries are, not only a pleasure to drink, but it is also a great way to practice sustainability. The green at local coffee roasteries are roasted daily, some are roasted-to-order, and produced in small batches which helps reduce carbon footprint. Wing restaurant spotlights Chinese cuisine with a creative modern flare

There’s an exciting new entry into the 2022 Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants guide that has gained much buzz since its opening a year ago. Wing restaurant, helmed by Michelin-starred Chef Vicky Cheng of acclaimed French-Chinese restaurant VEA, is nestled on the 29th floor of The Wellington in Sheung Wan, just a floor below its acclaimed sister eatery VEA.

Michelin star Chef Vicky Cheng

Having been trained in French techniques, Wing is a step outside of Cheng’s comfort zone, prompted by his journey of rediscovering his Chinese roots. Here, the menu is described as seasonal dining. By sourcing only the freshest and seasonal ingredients, the Hong Kong-born chef offers his patrons a rotation of the best ingredients for each season of the year. “This is my take on Chinese cuisine”, Cheng tells Gafencu. “We do what I like to call ‘boundary-less Chinese cuisine’. By respecting centuries of traditions and flavour combinations, but at the same time adding our own element to the dishes, we are able to create flavours of our own, and ultimately a cuisine of our own”.

“We do ‘boundary-less Chinese cuisine’…adding our own element to the dishes to create flavours of our own”

Without delay, we began with a line up of cold appetisers. The Firefly Squid with Yunnan Chili and Bull Kelp was a deliciously tender and creamy bite with a gentle hint of spice, courtesy of the generous Yunnan chili garnished atop, while the Drunken South African Abalone was a sweeter follow up to contrast. Perfectly marinated with two different types of Chinese wine, the balance of sweet and savoury was a delight.

French White Asparagus with Chicken Fat; Chili Shirako with Century Egg

To its side, was the French White Asparagus with Chicken Fat. Sprinkled with chicken skin crisps, this gave the dish a subtle yet noticeable dimension in texture and taste. Last in line from the appetisers was the Chili Shirako with Century Egg. Delighting with a custard-like texture and taste that paired perfectly well with the mild flavours of the soft-boiled century egg. The dish was brought together with a tantalising note thanks to the restaurant’s house-made Sichuan chilli sauce.

Steamed Japanese Pomfret with Preserved Vegetables

Serving as a brief interim while we waited in anticipation for the second course was the Shanlinsi Oolong tea. Subtle with a fruity aftertaste, our palates were refreshed as we steadied ourselves for the Steamed Japanese Pomfret with Preserved Vegetables. Complementing the fatty, natural sweetness of the meat was a liberal bed of house-preserved vegetables and fresh scallions – giving the fish a unique aroma.

Next to arrive was the Baby Pigeon with Cane Sugar. Dry-aged for about three days, then glazed with sugar cane juice before finally smoked with dried sugar cane pulp, the result of this elaborate preparation is a decadently sweet and incredibly crispy skinned bird with juicy, tender meat that slid right off the bone.

Wing restaurant spotlights Chinese cuisine with a creative modern flare_Abalone sauce fish maw with morel mushroom rice
Abalone Sauce Fish Maw with Morel Mushroom Rice

Not long after had we finished off the game on our plates did the next dish arrive, the Abalone Sauce Fish Maw with Morel Mushroom Rice. The chef used two-head fish maw for the dish, which, to put in perspective, is thicker and more chewy than typical fish maw. Rich umami flavours exude throughout each component of the dish, from the fish maw that was braised in house-made abalone sauce to the morel mushroom rice that was elevated by the hint of earthy notes. When put together in a single bite, a seamless balance of texture and flavours are married in perfect harmony.

Wing restaurant spotlights Chinese cuisine with a creative modern flare_ Osmanthus snow gum with coconut sorbet
Osmanthus Snow Gum with Coconut Sorbet

To end on a refreshing note, the dessert arrived in the form of an Osmanthus Snow Gum with Coconut Sorbet. We took our time savouring this sweet ending for as long as it lasted. The snow gum, infused with Osmanthus tea, resembled the unique texture of a bird’s nest, but left a satisfying swirl of floral notes on our palates. The coconut sorbet, on the other hand, added a creamy body to the dessert that was both sweet and refreshing. If there was anything we could have added, it would have been a second serving.

Five best pocket-size cameras to take on your travels

Summer is out! Those who are itching to take a trip out of town or hankering for a thrilling off-road adventure or even an underwater deep dive will want to capture all their exciting moments on camera. Afterall, if you don’t get to show it off on social media, did it even happen at all? For that, we’ve listed the best compact, pocket-size cameras in 2022 that are perfect for vlogging your adventure on-the-go.

As substitute for bulky DSLR or mirrorless digital cameras, but notches ahead of your handy smartphone, these pocket-size cameras are perfect for those wanting to travel light, but still look for high resolution playback for any weather and occasion. Small enough to slip into your pockets and easier to fiddle with than your smartphone, these are the pocket-size cameras to get for your next travel.

Best Overall:  GoPro HERO 10 Black

eight Best pocket cameras to take on your travels gafencu gadget review gopro hero 10 black (3)
(Photo: Hero 10 Black, courtesy of GoPro)

The Specs: Starting at the top of the list is the Hero 10 Black by action camera specialists GoPro. Although we had hoped to find a worthy contender to trump the coveted Hero 10 Black, to the surprise of none, it remains at the top of the best action camera and pocket camera for travels. Versatile to the max, it can suit any occasion or situation, from high-intensity sports videos to underwater diving shots, or simply travel vlogs and day-to-day video journaling.

It shoots in 5.4k 23MP at 60fps and can dive underwater up to a depth of 33ft. It boasts an amazing HyperSmooth 4.0 video stabilization in all modes and performs brilliantly even in low light. It features a wide and extra wide angle lens that captures video and images in professional quality and also offers timpe lapse and slow-mo modes. It captures stills of 19.6MP videos as well as snap 23MP photos in its dedicated photo mode. It is also powered by a new GP2 processor that allows for smoother video playback, especially on its improved front-facing screen.

The Cons: Despite the impressively clear resolution of its specifications, the one flaw that we can point out is that its colour contrasts and range of colour profiles fall flat on details and its built-in microphone could have been made to sound more detailed.

The Verdict: With a shock-proof case that is mountable to a wide range of different accessories, and full-automatic feature, this action / pocket camera is the perfect companion for adventure-seekers and beginner vloggers. It even allows for cloud connectivity for easy and instant sharing.

Most Compact: DJI Osmo Pocket 2

(Photo: Osmos Pocket 2, courtesy of DJI)

The Specs: Ultra-compact and light weight, the Osmos Pocket 2 by drone experts DJI has put out a pocket-size vlogging camera perfect for capturing memorable moments on your travels or day-to-day. Despite its miniature size, it packs impressive specs. Most notably, its impressive image stabaliser, thanks to its built-in 3-axis stabilization and ActiveTrack 3.0 technology which captures clear and focused movements while on-the-go.

The device shoots in a 4K wide angle in 24fps with a pretty clear built-in microphone. It also features various shooting modes such as, time lapse, slow-mo, and even a story mode that offers video and music templates for short film compositions — simplifying video production and photography while on-the-go. It firmware technology also allows for users to seamlessly switch from video to photo mode with a simple click of a button, perfect for those who love collecting snapshots of their travels and experiences.

The Cons: Although the device offers a myriad of shooting modes to choose from, its quality and functionality can be limited depending on which mode you’re in. For example, active tracker and face tracking isn’t available in 4K mode and the ability to zoom in on slow-mo mode is absent.

The Verdict: There’s not a lot to complain about with the DJI Osmos Pocket 2, but if there are any drawbacks to this is, it would be that it does not compare to the image and video quality you would get from a DSLR, which isn’t surprising given the size of this pocket camera. Although there could be some improvements on consistency of quality throughout the different shooting modes, overall it is a great pocket-size camera to take on travels for day-to-day journaling, vlogging and easy editing.

Best All-rounded 360 Cam: Insta360 One X2

(Photo: One X2, courtesy of Insta360)

The Specs: Never miss a shot because its 360 lens captures EVERYTHING, allowing for efficient, effortless, and stress-free video editing. It shoots in an impressive 5.7K quality in 24fps in a more dynamic range of colour profiles and modes, such as stable cam, 150-degrees wide angle, selfie mode, stable cam mode and of course 360-degree mode.

It’s small enough to fit in your pocket, and holds comfortably in the hand, and with instant connectivity to your smartphone and a dedicated editing app, sharing memorable adventures and amazing video content with friends and family is made even easier. Did we mention that this camera is also IPX 8 waterproof up to 8 meters underwater without a case?

The Cons: The only drawback is that its firmware can be a little laggy when switching from one mode to the other, and has been criticised for occasionally freezing in between modes. And although the battery life is a vast improvement from its predecessor it still only captures about 60 to 80 minutes of high resolution video. For this we suggest to pack extra batteries.

The Verdict: Nonetheless, the strengths definitely outweigh the drawbacks with this pocket-size camera. Making this a versatile action camera that boasts the unique feature of a 360-angle for an immersive throwback of every moment.

Best for Beginners: Akaso Brave 7 LE

(Photo: Akaso Brave 7 LE, courtesy of Akaso)

The Specs: The Specs: The Akaso Brave 7 is the brand’s most expensive model to date, but still it is one of the most affordable action cameras on the market that will still offer decent quality videos and photos. It shoots 4K videos in 30fps and 20MP photos. With a 6-Axis Image Stabiliser, its video quality isn’t the best on the market right now but it does score points above brands like GoPro and DJI in areas like battery life and convenience.

It is IPX 7 waterproof without a case, and can dive 1 meter underwater (farther with a waterproof case) and has the feature of switch shooting modes while underwater with its touch-screen dual screen, which most action cameras don’t. With this device you can also choose to shoot in time-lapse and slow-mo in 60fps HD mode for all those high impact action moments.

The Cons: A major drawback to the camera, especially for those who enjoy narrating their day-to-day and travels is that, although it is built in with an internal mic, the audio clarity and quality is not comparable to that of GoPros or Camcorders, and it does not support external mic.

The Verdict: Overall, the Akaso Brave performs well and comes complete with several accessories and mounts upon purchase, which makes it much more affordable than that of GoPro and DJI models, although it is the brand’s most expensive model to date. It will serve well for beginners and those who prefer convenience.

Best for Photos: Ricoh GR IIIx

eight Best pocket cameras to take on your travels gafencu gadget review ricoh gr iiix (2)
(Photo: Ricoh GR IIIx, courtesy of Ricoh)

The Specs: For a compact substitute for a DSLR, Ricoh has put out a pocket-siz camera that makes one-handed shooting comfortable and effortles. It shoots 24.4MP through an APS-C sensor and 40mm high-resolution GR fixed lens.

It fits comfortably in the pocket and scores high for its portability, convenience and quality that serves street photographers and photography enthusiast a golden balance between high resolution cameras and mobile phones. Those who enjoy everyday photo journaling will find themselves reaching for this gadget more often their smartphone.

The Cons: Although its 24.4MP and APS-C sensor gives the camera great image quality, the auto-focus for video is not great, especially compared to the other action cameras presented on the list. Aside from that, the shooting modes and settings are pretty basic and the battery capacity doesn’t boast a very long lifespan, but like the Insta360, you can always buy extra rechargeable batteries.

The Verdict: Although the Ricoh GR IIIx is more limiting than most DSLRs, it is certainly more compact. It also boasts sharp images in high resolution and high contrast in 35mm format, although its auto-focus doesn’t perform well on video, which may be a deal breaker for those on the market for vlogging cameras.

What you didn’t know about beauty queen-turned-Hollywood star Priyanka Chopra

To say that Priyanka Chopra has her fingers in many pies would be an understatement indeed. The 39-year-old has been, in turns, a beauty queen, a Bollywood actress, a singer, a Hollywood star, an author, an activist, a producer, and latterly, a mother. Indeed, versatility seems to be second-nature to the talented thespian, who was born and raised in India but also educated in the US. And it’s this quality – in addition to her looks and smarts – that has seen her thrive through a seemingly endless series of career changes that would have most feeling daunted. Here, we explore some of the trials and triumphs of this trailblazing modern woman.

What you didn't know about beauty queen-turned-Hollywood star Priyanka Chopra gafencu

Racial Discord
Chopra was born on 18 July 1982 in the Indian city of Jamshedpur to army physician parents. Through the family’s various postings, she spent her childhood in an assortment of locations including Delhi, Ladakh, Chandigarh, Pune, Ambala and Lucknow. As a teenager, she moved to Massachusetts and then Iowa to live with her aunt, and as an outsider, she was the target of bullying by her peers. “I was a teenager who did not even know how to wear heels, but I learnt… I didn’t know how to fit in,” she recalls. “Also, I faced some racial issues. Some students called me ‘browny’, they also pointed fingers at me for being Indian, but I survived.”

Engineering Dreams
Young Priyanka originally aspired to study aeronautical engineering and work for NASA. However, when her mother signed her up for the Miss India beauty pageant in 2000, her life was forever changed. After clinching the crown at that particular event, the Quantico and The Matrix Resurrections star would go on to win several other competitions, including the prestigious Miss World accolade that same year. Speaking of her thwarted ambitions, she muses, “I’ve been in the public since I was 17 years old and it’s really all I’ve known. Being crowned Miss India and then Miss World, suddenly I went on from [hopefully] becoming an aeronautical engineer [to a] carefree teenager to standing on a world stage, where I have to have a point of view on probably the most important world events.”

Bollywood Bread & Butter
Hot on the heels of her newfound fame, Chopra was offered the opportunity to segue into an acting career within Bollywood – the world’s largest producer of films. Within a handful of years, she had catapulted herself to the forefront of the industry, becoming one of the country’s most successful actresses and selling billions of cinema tickets annually. Simultaneously, she kicked off her singing career, lending her vocal talents to several songs in the movies she starred in.

Hollywood High Life
Right at the peak of her career, Chopra’s manager suggested she return to the United States to pursue her musical career on an international scale. Recalling that decision, she says, “I wasn’t looking to do work in America. I was at this amazing point in my career. I was doing critically acclaimed work and winning awards. So I kind of laughed at the idea.”
Ultimately, though, she took the chance, signed with Universal Music Group, and became the first Bollywood star to be represented by Los Angeles-based Creative Artists Agency. Several singles – including collaborations with such noted musicians as Pitbull and will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas fame – followed. “It was just magical,” she reminisces. “Those three, four years just went by. I was being serenaded by this rock-and-roll lifestyle.”

People’s Person
In yet another transition, the Bollywood actress-turned-singer hit a major milestone when she nabbed the lead role of Alex Parrish in the spy thriller TV series Quantico in 2015. Speaking of her personal connection to the character, she says, “Quantico for me was a really big win. Not just because of being the first time an Indian or South Asian actor was the lead of a network show, but, more than that, because I was not put in the box, like the show wasn’t My Big Fat Indian Wedding.” Her acting chops were praised by critics and the public alike; she was the first South Asian actor to win a People’s Choice Award, and went on to appear in a smattering of movies after the series wrapped in 2018.

Meet Cute
The story of Chopra’s relationship with singer Nick Jonas is now the stuff of legends. Having initially slid into her Twitter DMs (direct messages) back in 2016, boy met girl in person a year later at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party. “He swept me off my feet,” she shares in her 2021 memoir, Unfinished. “Once we started dating, it felt like I was being carried by a gigantic, unstoppable wave.” After a high-profile romance spanning a proposal after just two months and marriage within the year, they tied the knot at two super-sumptuous wedding ceremonies in India at the end of 2018. Despite some raised eyebrows over their age difference – Chopra is 10 years her husband’s senior – and suspicions that the relationship was all for show, the pair still seem very much in love, and recently welcomed their first child via surrogacy.

The Good Fight
From beauty queen to Bollywood actress to Hollywood star and social media influencer, Chopra’s CV is already impressive, but in 2015 she expanded her horizons even further by starting her own production company, the Mumbai-based Purple Pebble Pictures. Galvanised by the struggles she faced in the entertainment industry, her impetus for starting this venture – which she runs alongside her mother, Madhu – was to create a platform to foster local talent and showcase the South Asian narrative from a more authentic point of view.

“I think collectively each one of us can push Hollywood, and push the powers that be, and be demanding and not just polite about it. I’ve been polite for a very long time. Now it’s time to say, ‘I’m sorry, that doesn’t work,’ and to fight for your characters,” she explains. “As a producer, I’m so grateful that I get the opportunity to do that, to be able to make stories and look for stories that normalise different cultures of the world.”

Clearly her passion has reaped big rewards. Last year’s production, The White Tiger – a film adaptation (in which Chopra also starred) of the eponymous Aravind Adiga novel that explores the imbalances of India’s caste system – was an Oscar contender for Best Adapted Screenplay.

All About Jadeite: A symbol of wealth and status

old has value but jade is invaluable, goes the Chinese saying. A revered Asian obsession since time immemorial, the ‘stone of heaven’ is prized for its hardness, resilience and purity, not to mention the belief that it can heal and ward off evil.

In China, jade has long been viewed as a symbol of wealth and great privilege; during the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD), Chinese nobility were interred in jade suits as part of an opulent ceremonial burial tradition reserved for the privileged classes. In a ritual suggesting that the smooth gemstone had magical abilities to prevent physical decay and provide an auspicious after-life, hundreds of square jade plaques were stitched together with wire to cover the body in its final resting place.

Archaeologists assumed tales of jade burial suits were the stuff of legend until two whole examples of said shrouds were unearthed in 1968 in the tomb of Liu Sheng, son of Emperor Jing, and his wife, Dou Wan. Replete with a total of 2,498 tiles of solid jade weighing two and half pounds and bound by the gold wire reserved for imperial lineage, their magnificence had excavators in awe.

While being bedecked in green at death is no longer the fashion, jade is still widely beloved as a status symbol, a valuable collectible and an investment option. A walk along any commercial street in China, Hong Kong or Vietnam affords the opportunity to admire jade jewellery worn by many in varied forms, from pendant to bracelet to prized cabochon ring.

Rising Fortunes

Jade trumps gold in value today – at about US$3,000 per ounce compared to bullion’s US$1,900. The mineral certainly outshone the metal in 2016 when auctioneers at the Shanghai World Jewellery Expo raised the opening bid for a jadeite to more than US$160 per gram (about $4,500 an ounce). It’s no wonder collecting jadeite (high-quality jade) is often viewed as offering greater investment return than buying real estate.

“There’s been an upward trend in jade’s prices over the last few years; China’s rising wealth has seen prices go through the roof,” says Chiang Shiu-fung, Vice-President and Senior Jewellery Specialist at Christie’s Hong Kong. A necklace that once belonged to American heiress Barbara Hutton comprising 27 vivid green jadeite beads – believed to have hailed from the Qing Dynasty court – and a Cartier clasp of rubies and diamonds sold at Sotheby’s in 2014 for an eye-watering US$27.44 million, roughly twice the estimated price.

When collectors part with millions of dollars for jade jewellery, what drives the market: the quality of the stone or its exquisite setting? “Always the quality, not so much the design,” noted Eddy Hui of iconic jade jewellery brand Edward Chiu Jewellery Art. In an interview with CNN in 2016, Hui remarked that sentiment and a stone’s value are inherently important to his traditional Asian clientele. “While Westerners pick more modern, beautifully carved jade pieces, the quality of the stone – the simplicity, originality and ability to make one feel calm – is the allure for most Chinese customers.”

Green Envy

As jadeite appreciates, so do the numbers of collectors who admire its quiet, translucent charm gafencu (2)
One of the purest, hardest and most translucent minerals, jadeite presents itself with gleaming lustre and an array of colours – stunning apple green, lavender, white, even black. Its toughness allows for fine carving and polishing to increase its luminosity and create stunning jewellery and decorative objects. The best jadeite comes from Myanmar (Burma), and the most precious is the translucent emerald-green allure of so-called imperial jadeite. Nephrite, jadeite’s low-grade cousin, is a weaker, cloudier mineral.

Since the type and quality of jade differs enormously, having an eye for a fake is critical. Indeed, colour or polymer is often added to low-grade green stones to augment their visual appeal and make them look like the real deal.

Carving Class

As jadeite appreciates, so do the numbers of collectors who admire its quiet, translucent charm gafencu (5)
Once the choice of the imperial court and then an elder generation of Chinese who covet its colour and protective powers, jade’s tranquil, glossy beauty is slowly spreading westwards. In 2008, former BBC journalist Andrew Shaw took an early retirement from the world of international news to learn jade carving in Suzhou, China.

Coming across a jade hawker stall in Thailand, the Londoner happened to pick up a quiet lavender jade Buddha. “It’s as if the beautiful stone sang to me. I fell in love, didn’t haggle, didn’t bargain, just bought it. The stone’s beauty and serenity were second to none,” says Shaw in his internationally acclaimed book, Jade Life: An Englishman’s Love Affair with China’s National Treasure.

From that moment he was pulled into the vivid intensity and energetic history of the stone. He learned the language and the delicate skills of carving the stone to become the only non-Chinese master jade carver in the world. “One in 20 Chinese wears some form of jade – yet no one in the West knows about this industry,” he notes.

Choose Wisely

As jadeite appreciates, so do the numbers of collectors who admire its quiet, translucent charm gafencu (8)
As with all things precious, there is a dark underbelly to the world of jade. The most valuable jadeite mined in the Himalayan foothills of Myanmar remains shrouded in a trail of blood, crony capitalism and lack of labour laws. While blood diamonds attracted international attention and Hollywood scripts, the jade journey remains largely unscrutinised. There is only a basic, broad classification of jade and no certification process, which means the end customer has to rely on instinct or blind faith that the piece they’re paying very dearly for has been ethically sourced.

Christie’s Chiang shares important insight into what a layperson should look for in a stone before flexing their wallet. Texture, light and hue are the three most important factors when picking a piece. You should be able to feel the smoothness and appreciate the gloss of the stone. Colour is a key determiner of price: “Go straight for green, pure green; not bluish or sea green, just green,” he advises.

Translucency is paramount, so as far as possible see if light radiates from the stone and passes through it. Finally, bigger isn’t always best. “Large is good in bricks, not in a gemstone,” he quips. “If you have the option of buying a bigger, commercial-grade jade and a smaller, finer-quality stone – it’s better to go for the quality.”
Methodology aside, Chiang concurs with jade master Shaw. Love at first sight is the best way to connect with jade: “When you know, you just know.”
