Art Next Expo 2021: A close focus on over 70 Hong Kong artists

If there is anything the last two trying years have proved, it is that art plays an ever more crucial role in times of change and adversity, and that the global pandemic had not dampened the determination and motivation of artistic talents in Hong Kong, Asia’s rising capital of art. Rather, it has demonstrated the pursuit for the arts and the focus and heightened interests in local artists are more prevalent than ever.

Northern Delights: Scrumptious Scandinavian dishes at Hjem

Following the fantastic reception of the city’s first stylish Burmese restaurant, Club Rangoon, its owners at F&B group Common Abode have shifted gears to introduce yet another relatively unfamiliar culinary concept in the form of Nordic eatery Hjem. Tucked along Hollywood Road near Man Mo Temple, this homely, welcoming new restaurant serves up authentic Nordic flavours alongside healthy beverages that are perfect for stressed-out urbanites to pick up on the go.

Scandinavian dishes Hjem hong kong_sheung_wan_gafencu

Hjem, which means ‘home’ in Norwegian (and pronounced ‘yem’ in English), lies particularly close to the heart of the group’s co-founder, Elin Fu, who grew up in the Scandinavian country. She explains, “Hjem is a way of keeping home close to me wherever I may be. Food can be a very personal thing; taste can evoke certain memories and can be an instigator of new experiences. I wanted to share with guests the same comfort that I felt growing up with Nordic cuisine.”

Scandinavian dishes Hjem hong kong smørrebrød_gafencu

In line with this vision, simple, farm-to-table offerings are the order of the day, typified by the selection of smørrebrød, open-faced sandwiches with a base of robust rye bread and an array of toppings – quite literally Hjem’s bread and butter.
Our own tasting started with a trio of smørrebrød. Arctic Prawn Smørrebrød sees a heap of mayonnaise-coated prawns plucked from the region’s icy waters and placed on a bed of boiled eggs. Hearty yet refreshing, the inherent richness of this cold dish is deftly tempered with the addition of crunchy medallions of baby radish. Generous dollops of salmon roe, meanwhile, elevate the texture of each bite with a burst of flavour.

Scandinavian dishes Hjem hong kong_artic shrimp_gafencu

We then dove into the Herring Smørrebrød. A staple fish in northern European diets, the herrings here are not smoked, salted or pickled as one might expect, but marinated in a pungent mustard dressing. The epitome of a love-it-or-hate-it cold sandwich – some diners may be put off by the topping’s strong aroma – it nonetheless offers unique insight into the tastes of Scandinavia.

Rounding out our platter was the warm Pork Belly Smørrebrød. Here the slivers of perfectly cooked pork belly are reminiscent of Korean samgyupsal in their preparation, all fatty goodness. To cut through the oiliness, the meat is grounded by a bed of tangy pickled red cabbage, with the accompanying fresh slivers adding a delightful crunch to proceedings. A note for the uninitiated: the smørrebrød are hugely filling despite their diminutive size, and even just one of these open-faced creations will likely satiate your appetite.

Scandinavian dishes Hjem hong kong meatballs_gafencu

If, however, you’ve yet to hit your limit, sampling a plate of Hjem’s Meatballs wouldn’t be amiss. The very definition of comfort food, the juicy meatballs are complemented by creamy mashed potato and umami-laden gravy. Once again, a balancing of flavours to avoid overpowering the taste buds is achieved: a spoonful of lingonberry sauce bequeaths each mouthful with a delightful tanginess that lingers long after the morsel slips down the throat.

Scandinavian dishes Hjem hong kong_honey_golden_milk_tea_gafencu

Alongside these comforting culinary treats, no visit to Hjem would be complete without sampling the coffees and healthy drinks on offer. From Nordic teas to kombucha spritzes, there’s something to tempt every wellness-minded diner. A star turn here is Honey Golden Milk Latte, a caffeine-free concoction that has ground turmeric as its key ingredient. Creamy with just a touch of sweetness, it is the perfect tipple to beat the heat when served over ice. Sit back and feel that invigorating Nordic breeze.

Central market gets a HK$500 million makeover — here’s what to expect

After three years of construction, rehabilitation, conservation and HK$500 million, the Central-set heritage building has finally reopened its doors to the public as a 21st Century Marketplace. Putting a close focus on local businesses and community building, it completes a “Heritage Triangle” between the redeveloped Police Married Quarters (PMQ) and the heritage-arts compound, Tai Kwun Centre.

A brief history
The Grade III Heritage Building was Hong Kong’s first modern wet market. Opened in 1842, the building was fully functional for more than six decades before the local government handed over the landmark site to the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) with the aim of revitalising the property under the new “Conserving Central” initiative. The 82-year old market, transformed in to a vibrant community hotspot, reopened its doors to the public on 23 August 2021 and is now jointly managed by the URA and Chinachem Group.

Million-dollar makeover
Pulling back the curtain on this million-dollar makeover – or rather HK$500 million – 13 out of the  than 200 original market stalls and the colonial flair in the architecture has been retained, albeit with a fresh face.

255 market stalls have been reconstructed into a “boundary-less spatial concept” with open storefronts, a semi-open courtyard and two levels of shopping, artisanal dining and events space for community building exercises. The venue breathes life into the area as it reflects the city’s spirit of innovation, vibrant energy and eclectic drive for new experiences.

A playground for all
Chinachem Group stated that, along with the URA, it hoped to turn the Central Market into a “playground for all” as seen with its various event spaces. The ground-level courtyard is decorated with lush greenery with a small garden of flowers on each end, the space replete with motion sensor system, LED projection wall and wireless network coverage has been redefined for community performances. The first level also features a 2,500 sq.ft multi-functional event space for open forums, exhibitions, and cultural performances for every age group.

Tokyo Paralympics: Hong Kong athletes haul medals in Japan

“I cannot believe we are finally here. Many doubted this day would happen,” remarked Andrew Parsons, President of the International Paralympic Committee in his Opening Ceremony speech at the Tokyo Paralympics Games.

Against all odds the delayed 16th Summer Paralympics are taking place in the presence of very few fans and amid rising fourth wave of COVID-19 infections in Japan. First held in 1964, Tokyo is the only city in the world to host the Paralympics twice. Hong Kong has already earned two bronze medals in table tennis and boccia (mixed individual) categories – whilst we’re hoping to clinch plenty more medals, a repeat success of the Olympic Games which concluded less than a month ago would be ideal – but, with 24 athletes across just eight sporting categories, it is going to be a pretty tight run for the top honour.

Scroll below for all the highlights of the Paralympic Games and the unmissable events –

The Hong Kong delegation

With a total of 126 medals till date, Hong Kong has enjoyed a remarkable streak at the Paralympic Games. Five years back in Rio, our medal haul of six – two golds, two silvers and two bronze – was considered a lackluster performance after the triumph of 2012 when Hong Kong’s Paralympians brought home 12 medals from London.

In 2021, the SAR has sent a delegation of 24 athletes, 40 coaches, National Paralympic Committee representatives, and other delegation officials. Athletes compete in eight sports – badminton, boccia, archery, equestrian, swimming, table tennis, athletics, and wheelchair fencing – hopes for outstanding honours are riding high.

17-year-old Wong Ting-ting after securing a bronze in the table tennis event

17-year-old Paralympian, Wong Ting-ting claimed Hong Kong’s first medal, a bronze, in women’s singles table tennis event. The young player won the first of a best-of-five match against current world number one, Russia’s veteran star Elena Prokofeva. She beat the Russian representative 11-9 in the first game, but lost 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 to the 50-year-old. Despite missing out on gold, support and praise has poured in from all quarters for the budding local athlete.

Wong Ting-ting made her debut at the Paralympic Games marvelously and outperformed veteran players, winning the first medal for Hong Kong at the Games. We are delighted and thrilled. Given her strong will and exceptional talent, I believe that she will reach new heights of sporting glory – Chief Executive, Carrie Lam in a statement to the press

Former world champion, Leung Yuk-wing has won the second bronze medal for Hong Kong at the Boccia Mixed Individual event beating China’s Zheng Yuansen 5-4 in the play-offs.  A boccia prodigy, 36-year-old won two golds at the 2004 Athens Games, just a year after his initiation in the sport, a gold in Rio and now waiting for a top spot at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Leung Yuk-wing has won a total of five medals for Hong Kong at various Paralympic Games through the years, including four in individual events!

The other dominant forces to watch out for are Alison Yu Chiu-yee who will participate in wheelchair fencing. Yu is outstanding on the piste, with seven golds, three silver and a bronze since her Athens 2004 debut, she doesn’t need any introduction. Ngai Ka-chuen, is a veteran in archery since 2009 but competing at the Paralympics for the first time, meanwhile 24-year-old Natasha Tse Pui-ting, is hoping to cinch medals in equestrian category.

History of Paralympics

Founded by Sir Ludwig Guttman as rehabilitation exercises for World War II veterans, the first edition of the Paralympics was held in 1960 in Rome, a week after the main Olympics. Called the Stoke Mandeville Games at the time, it was a competition for just 400 wheelchair-bound athletes from 23 countries. The event was retrospectively called as the first Paralympic Games – contrary to popular belief, the name Paralympics does not come from ‘paralysis’ and ‘Olympics’, instead it was coined using the Greek preposition ‘para’, which means parallel or alongside.
Today, that multi-sporting event has become the pinnacle of athletic achievement for people with physical disabilities – in 2021, 539 events across 22 different sports are taking place in Tokyo. Badminton and taekwondo are being introduced at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics for the first time.

Going with the Flow: How best to apply feng shui at home

Feng shui, the ancient Chinese geomantic art of understanding the universe, is used to bring harmony and balance to a home and its residents. Geomantic principles and the practices of interior architecture and design often follow divergent paths, but ultimately, they align towards the same goal – creating a happy home brimming with an abundance of positive energy.

chinese geomancy compass general set up feng shui at home interior decorating gafencu luxury living

What is feng shui?
Literally translated as wind (feng) and water (shui), feng shui focuses on the invisible forces of the universe called qi, also known as energy. Practitioners believe that the flow of positive energy throughout a home promotes elevated moods, good health and prosperity, while an accumulated level of negative energy may have severe consequences, such as a failed business venture, bankruptcy, breakup or serious illness. According to feng shui master John Choi, who has accrued substantial knowledge of Eastern and Western preferences in modern home design, “Feng shui is more than just a superstition, it is a science and computation of how energy flows in our environment”.

How to use feng shui at home?
Firstly, determining the direction of the entrance is the most important step in enhancing feng shui in the home by turn. Then, you can focus on each room. An emphasis on rooms that you spend the most time in also greatly affects your well-being. In most cases, this is the bedroom, living room and kitchen. But take heed, as Choi says, “If the direction of the home is not accurate, the entire process and arrangement can amplify bad energy, instead of good”.

To apply feng shui at home, here are a few tips to take note of:

feng shui at home interior decorating living room gafencu luxury living

Tip 1: Start at the beginning
Starting from the the most crucial area – the living room – or in the case of larger homes, the entrance hall, the door represents the first checkpoint for qi to flow in. Keeping this area spacious and clutter-free is key. Wall consoles and cabinets that are flush to the wall are perfect for storage space and de-cluttering, allowing a vast area for energy to circulate.

Special attention should be paid to beams in your living area. Avoid placing sofas, chairs or the dining table underneath a beam, since its electromagnetic energy can cause an imbalance that may negatively impact health. This rule applies to beds too. Loose electric cables should also be kept away from furniture on which people sit or lie on.

Tip 2: Hang paintings that represent nature and happiness
Symbolism also plays a huge role in feng shui. Choi indicates that imagery such as family portraits, or paintings of natural landscapes like mountains and greenery, symbolise joy and support. These visuals can be hung against the wall behind the sofa or the desk in the study or home office.

Tip 3: Keep everything balanced
A balanced layout, in the form of a square or rectangle, and symmetric proportions also allow qi to flow seamlessly throughout the space. For instance, wall consoles or cabinets of the same height placed on each side of the wall, or arranging a seating area with a sofa facing the television flanked by two armchairs, will provide a calming sense of balance and harmony between people and environment.

Tip 4: Keep opposing elements from clashing
Moving on to the kitchen, a place used to nourish the members of the household, it is an area that can directly impact the health. Feng shui in this space is especially important if you spend a lot of time cooking and eating at home.

If a feng shui expert has been consulted here, it would be addressed that the position of the stove (fire) should not face directly opposite or beside the sink (water). This is because the two elements will clash and create an imblanace in the room. “One way to mitigate such a clash between fire and water is to place small pebbles between the stove and the sink”, says Choi.

Tip 5: Use an electric stove in open kitchens
Especially for open kitchens positioned in an inauspicious direction of the home, the gas stove should face away from the main entrance and the living room, as the fire energy will flow out into the area, affecting the health of the entire family. Electric or induction cookers, however, are fair game. If it isn’t possible to install an electic or induction cooker, one way to reduce the impact of negative fire energy would be by placing several metal rulers around the stove area or set up a six- to eight-foot convertible screen in between the kitchen and the sitting area or main entrance.

Tip 6: Position the bed mindfully
Turning the attention to the bedroom, it is a chamber where good feng shui is important, because of it serves as the space for rest and rejuvenation.

The headboard should never be in front of the window or next to the door as the rush of qi that flows in can cause restless nights and bad dreams. But in smaller rooms, where furniture arrangement is limited, there is a simple solution: place a wall console or any décor on a bedside table next to the bed to redirect the flow of energy away from you.

Tip 7: Use plants and mirrors to boost positive energy
Indoor plants such as bamboo and fresh flowers help boost the positive energy of the space. However, mirrors should be positioned mindfully. One common taboo among Chinese beliefs is that, although mirrors can reflect natural sunlight and positive energy around the room, it can also invite unwanted guests and spirits in when positioned towards the bed.

Tip 8: Decorate with auspicious colours
For those new to feng shui, painting the walls in neutral earth tones, such as beige and light grey, while avoiding bold shades of red and black, will generally benefit the home’s balance and serenity. To avoid sickness, decorate with earthy and metallic shades, like green, white, silver, gold or grey.

Tip 9: Seek out a professional
As a cautionary note, arranging elements in the home without an accurate feng shui reading is like playing with fire. A seemingly auspicious item placed in the wrong direction can result in grave consequences, so consult an expert before refreshing your décor.

An excerpt from Feng Shui Master Peter So’s 2021 Chinese Almanac

General Setup for the year 2021
According to celebrated feng shui master Peter So’s, 2021 Chinese Almanac, the general set up of feng shui items that will welcome improved relationships, intelligence, good health, happiness and career growth are in the south, east, west, northeast and the centre, respectively. While the north, southeast, northwest and southwest directions correspond to minor and major sicknesses, disaster and gossip.

Referring to the illustrated grid, a pink object placed in the southwest direction will prevent gossip against you, while a music box and water element, such as a glass of water, in the southeast and north direction will reduce any impact of major illnesses. Water elements in the east and centre positions can help boost the intelligence and career energy, while four potted plants in the northeast direction will bring in more joy. To boost your relationship and fortune, place musical and water elements in the south and west grids.
