Haute joallerie aficionados are in for a treat next week with not one, but two high-end jewellery shows coming to our fair city – HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show and Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show. Over 4,550 exhibitors from 50 countries will be showcasing their precious wares, giving Hong Kongers a glimpse at some of the most beautiful gemstones and designs in the world.

Without pausing for breath, the 35th edition of HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show kicks off just two days later, running from 1 to 5 March at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Here, beautiful finished high jewellery pieces from both local and international manufacturers take place of pride.

Alongside the stunning jewellery on display, the two events will also host a series of talks and forums on pertinent industry topics such as the evolving role of technology in the jewellery world, opportunities in Belt and Road markets, and so forth.

Side-by-side, HKTDC International Diamond, Gem and Pearl Show and HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show will form the world’s largest jewellery marketplace, with HKTDC expecting 115 buying missions comprising over 8,000 companies from 75 countries and regions to attend.

Celebrate singledom this Valentine’s Day

Celebrate singledom this Valentine's Day

While the rest of the world circles 14 February on their calendars, do you find yourself rolling your eyes at the thought of being forced to acknowledge yet another Valentine’s Day as a singleton?

Whether you are newly solo, happily single or a strong believer that Valentine’s Day is repackaged consumerism, there’s still a way to celebrate without surrendering your cynicism. Anti-Valentine’s Day is the perfect way to celebrate singledom or bask in bitterness. If you’re looking for a little inspiration, we’ve rounded up a list of our favourite ways to partake – in the most unromantic way possible, of course:

Anti-love tiki party

Celebrate singledom this Valentine's Day

Drown your sorrows or celebrate all things anti-love at Wahtiki Island Lounge’s O Come All Ye Single Anti-Valentine’s Day party. Enjoy rum cocktails and delectable Tiki Tidbits – including chilli and pepper salted squid and Hokkaido cheese scalenes – while mingling with like-minded singles on Valentine’s Day with absolutely no judgment. Entry is priced from HK$500 and includes three cocktails and a free-flow buffet.

Escape to Ophelia’s celebration of freedom

Celebrate singledom this Valentine's Day

Ophelia introduces its second annual Anti-Valentine’s Day Party with The Trouble with Paradise – a celebration of freedom and singletons. Escape into Ophelia’s paradise of beauty, courage and tragedy where you can rule as mythological creations Lilith and the Serpent while sipping on a special antidote or love cocktail. Entry is free, but be sure to RSVP to secure a spot on the guest list.

Satisfy your soul with a feast and free drinks

Celebrate singledom this Valentine's Day

Order like no one cares and feast like nobody’s watching at Big Sur, a newly opened restro-pub in Central. Their anti-V Day menu features soul-satisfying dishes like grilled scallop tacos (HK$65 each), “Hearts Galore”, charcoal grilled duck hearts, served with house-made flour tortilla (HK$45 each) and the Heart Attack Burger (HK$190), served with beef patty, house-smoked bacon, cheddar and pepper jack cheese with jalapenos. If there’s room for more, you can also head to Brazilian Japanese restaurant, Uma Nota, where they are offering free drinks for singles only this Valentine’s Day.

Toast to being single and fabulous

Celebrate singledom this Valentine's Day

Avoid any awkward displays of affection by planning a night on the couch. Indulge in the Anti-Valentine’s Day Box from Wine Moments, complete with three bottles of wine, including the quite fittingly named Rotten Rosé to celebrate being single and fabulous. Alternatively, opt for the Netflix and Chill Wine Box and invite your friends over for a binge.

Flatter yourself with flowers

Bydeau online flower shop

There’s nothing quite like a vaseful of flowers to brighten up your living room and your mood at the same time! If you’re disinclined to leave the comforts of home, that’s not a problem. Bydeau‘s newly launched online flower shop offers a plethora of floral products from classic red roses to beautifully arranged bouquets that can be delivered to your doorstep with just a few clicks of a button. They even offer a selection of succulents for those lacking the green touch!

Anti-romantic movie binge

Celebrate singledom this Valentine's Day

To round it off, here’s a list of anti-romantic movies:

  • The Shining – Where marriage finds a family moving into a house of horrors and the wife watches as her husband slowly goes insane.
  • Frances Ha – The reality of a girl who wants so much more from life but continues to live with unaccounted joy and lightness along the way.
  • Basic Instinct – Witness destructive relationships and twisted affairs in this sexy but sinister thriller.

If all of this has made you feel rather bitter, read on for an alternative. Valentine’s Day should be a day to celebrate love in all its many forms, so shift the focus away from your own status by doing a good deed for your single friends or taking your parents or grandparents out for dinner. It’s all in the spirit of love, and on the bright side, granny probably won’t be expecting a 7-carat diamond ring.

Mr & Mrs Fox relaunches its Foxy Pub Quiz

Think you’re a smart cookie? Then prove it. Mr & Mrs Fox dares you to vie for the grand prize of its Foxy Pub Quiz, which just relaunched last 30 January 2018. Located in the downstairs all-day-dining Mrs Fox (Mr Fox upstairs serves food from the finer end of the spectrum), the friendly competition invites groups of six to rack their brains for answers to trivia questions the likes of “Which country consumes the most chocolate per person?” (Answer: Switzerland)

So what’s new with the Foxy Pub Quiz, which took a 6-month hiatus from August last year? We ask JP Lizot, Quizmaster and Senior Operations Manager.

“The pub quiz had been running for about a year at Fox, but we decided to take a break to brainstorm. We wanted to come up with a more concise and interactive concept,” he says. “We’re going to hold it every two months from now on, so keep your eyes peeled for our next one in March.”

JP Lizot, Senior Operations Manager at Swire’s Mr & Mrs Fox

This time around, the Fox team is also promising a time limit of 2 hours for five categories: F&B, Technology, Love and Romance, General Information and Music. We don’t want to divulge too many of the new format’s secrets, but we will tell you this: be prepared to identify dance moves and sing if you must. If this sounds like torture to you, make sure you have a stand-in to suffer in your place!

“For the first pub quiz, we decided to give each group a line from Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, and make them sing it in exchange for points,” says Lizot. “People took it to another level, it was hilarious. For future ones, we’re looking into cocktail making, maybe food assembling, Pictionary, and other answers based on physical interaction. We want to take the experience of team laughter, and for people to talk more about it.”

And finally, the question we’ve all been waiting for: What do you actually get if you win?!

Last month it was a HK$1,000 bar tab for the evening, six red bottles from a guest supplier, six bottles of white wine, an engraved 1.5-litre bottle with the winning team’s name and a Valentine dinner for two worth HK$1,100. (Read: 3 Different venues to try this Valentine’s Day).

In a heart-warming turn of events, the winning team decided to share their spoils with other players because “they don’t like wine”. Now that’s something to boggle the mind.

The next Foxy Pub Quiz (prizes: gym, beverages!) will be on Tuesday, 27 March 2018 from 7-9pm. Mr & Mrs Fox, 23 Tong Chong Street, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong. +852 2697 8500dine@mrmrsfox.comwww.mrmrsfox.com

Multimedia artist Natalie Wong collaborates with The Hive for first solo exhibition

Just in time for Hong Kong Arts Month, British Chinese mixed media artist Natalie Wong is set to open her first solo exhibition in partnership with arts venue The Hive Spring. Entitled “Neon Rap Portraits”, the series features glowing depictions of today’s biggest hip-hop stars the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z and Drake.

The Hong Kong twist to Wong’s artworks is her use of electroluminescent wire: a nod to the city’s iconic neon imagery. Wong also neatly links the ‘freestyle’ concept of her continuous line method to the essence of rap, saying “my lines are improvised in the moment, and it mirrors what a rapper does when he freestyles.”

Wong when viral when pop culture giants Hypebeast and Missbich covered Neon Rap Portraits. Her pieces have since received enquiries from several international buyers. “There have also been multiple collectors interested in the same pieces which have resulted in a price increase in some of the work,” said Wong during the first week of release.

Wong’s traction among art buyers marks a departure from the traditional gallery route that many of the last generation’s artists had to struggle with in the early days of their careers. “Through the production of high quality digital content I have been able to reach buyers directly,” says Wong. “Galleries rarely take on new artists, so I have online channels to thank for the opportunity to showcase my work and reach a far wider audience.”

Wong says online exposure has allowed early-career artists like her to break into the market and build their own client lists.

Catch this up-and-coming artist in the flesh on February 22, 2018 at The Hive Spring in Aberdeen.

Event Details

Date: 22 Feb 2018

Time: 7-10pm

Address: The Hive Spring, 3/F Remex Centre, 42 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen

Tickets: Free – register here

If you can’t make it on the soft opening, you can still pop in to see the exhibited art, which will be on display up until the 22nd of March in the same location. (And while in you’re the area, why not drop by newly-opened restaurant Komune for deliciously playful cuisine?)

About the artist

‘Street Pop Cubism’ pioneer Natalie Wong first made waves in the art world with her project 100 Paper Sneakers, a showcase of Nike Air Jordan 1 sculptures made from thickly textured paper and card. Since then her work has been featured in several international publications including GQ, Esquire, HYPEBEAST, IT Fashion, LifestyleAsia and Popbee. www.natmozzie.com

About The Hive Spring

The Hive Spring is the newest addition to the network of the Hive Co-working spaces; it also functions as an arts and culture centre, providing a platform for a wide discipline of emerging artists.

Acker Merrall & Condit announces extravagant HK$208,888 wine weekend

American wine auction house Acker Merrall & Condit began 2018 in much the same way it ended 2017 – with a seriously impressive wine inventory and even more impressive sales figures.

After successful first auction, Acker Merrall & Condit Chairman John Kapon announces HK$208,888 wine weekend
Acker Merrall & Condit Chairman John Kapon on the podium of last weekend’s Hong Kong auction

The company concluded its first auction of the year in Hong Kong last weekend, drawing in US$5.75million in sales and setting 113 world records simultaneously. Top performers included a six-bottle lot of 1990 Henri Jayer Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux (sold for US$152,981) and a fifty-two bottle vertical collection of Mouton Rothschild (US$76,490).

Despite this fantastic performance, Acker Merrall & Condit is not about to rest on its laurels. In fact, the wine merchant is looking to reinvent the wine tasting experience in Asia at the highest levels.

Auction Highlights: 2 double magnums 1989 Chateau Petrus (HKD$208,000-280,000)
Auction Highlights: 2 double magnums 1989 Chateau Petrus (sold for HKD$271,700)

Following the massive success of its inaugural Greatest Wines Weekend in New York City last year, Acker Merrall & Condit will be bringing this amazing experience to Hong Kong and Macau. Eyeing the most discerning (and most affluent) oenology enthusiasts and collectors, it is offering just 18 places for a special three-dinner event running 7-9 June.

Attendees will be wined and dined at three Michelin star Bo Innovation, then at the Peninsula Hotel before being helicoptered across to Macau on the third evening for a meal at The Eight.

Auction Highlights: 12 bottles 1990 DRC La Tache (HKD$520,000-680,000)
Auction Highlights: 12 bottles 1990 DRC La Tache (sold for HKD$592,800)

While the food promises to be fantastic, the true stars of the show are the amazingly rare wines served alongside them. Standout vintages include an 1884, 1890 and 1900 d’Yquem, a 1911 LaTour, a 1928 Lafite Rothschild, a 1945 Mouton Rothschild and a1959 Krug champagne.

The experience won’t come cheap. Tickets are set at a staggering HK$208,888 per head, but for a true wine lover, how much is too much for this once-in-a-lifetime affair?

Longines Masters of Hong Kong set to drive the city horse-mad

Equine enthusiasts, mark your calendars. The prestigious Longines Masters of Hong Kong kicks off in just over two weeks! From 9-11 February, the world’s top equestrian riders will compete in a series of show jumping and racing contests in the hopes of nabbing a coveted podium position.

Longines Masters of Hong Kong to run concurrently with Asia Horse Week

For the uninitiated, Longines Masters of Hong Kong marks the second leg of the annual Longines Masters series. Much like the tennis Grand Slams, it is an annual intercontinental affair. The first chapter drew to a spectacular close in Paris in December with Germany’s Daniel Deusser achieving top honours on his beautiful mount, Cornet d’Amour. The third and final leg will conclude in New York this coming April.

This year, Longines Masters of Hong Kong promises to be more exciting than ever. For the first time (and in a move guaranteed to thrill local fans), two home-grown talents – 26-year-old Jacqueline Lai and 21-year-old Clarissa Lyra – are set to compete side-by-side with well-established jump-jockey stars from around the world.

Longines Masters of Hong Kong will kick off on 9 February

But that’s not all! The three-day event will be running concurrently with the inaugural edition of Asia Horse Week in a mammoth two-for-one special. Races and competitions will be interspersed with conferences and talks designed to draw the equestrian community closer together in an ‘East meets West’ forum.

If you want to take a break from all the horses, that’s not a problem either. The expansive Prestige Village will be filled to the brim with exhibitions, performances and gastronomic treats. Highlights include a display of the event’s Official Watch from Title Partner Longines, an enthralling equestrian performance by horse whisperer Clemence Faivre and musical entertainment by Dutch MC RiverJaxx.
