Fitness First: Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo on in July

Fitness is big business in Hong Kong. From groups of runners taking over the pavements to gyms filled to bursting point, it seems that the majority of Hong Kongers partake in some kind of fitness activity.

With this in mind, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) has organised the inaugural Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo. The event will showcase sports and leisure products from more than 90 exhibitors from Hong Kong, mainland China, Japan and Korea, along with services from more than 120 brands.

The expo will be split into six zones: Outdoor Adventure, Sports Hub, Health and Fitness, Photography World, Fun and Play and Handicraft Market.

“This all-new expo showcases and sells sports and leisure products, arts and hobby supplies, as well as interest classes,” says HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau.

“Members of the public can try some of the products and take part in experiential activities, such as indoor climbing, emerging sports and handicraft workshops. Exhibitors can collect valuable consumer insights on their products and services, launch new products and build their brands through this platform.”

The expo will feature a climbing wall, a rope-jumping competition, freestyle football performances, virtual reality workshops and more.

Autographed football tops from stars such as Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr. and Cristiano Ronaldo will be on display in the Hall of Fame.

Visitors will get the chance to listen to stories from local elite athletes including swimmer Yvette Kong, 5,000m and half-marathon athlete Gi Ka Man and climbing expert John Tsang, the first Hongkonger to complete the Pacific Crest Trail Wong Wai Po.

The expo isn’t primarily sport-based, however, as it will also have over 40 on-site activities including handicraft and photography workshops, sportswear fashion shows, magic performances, music competitions and artificial intelligence (AI) Go competitions.

On the second day of the expo, budding photographers can attend the Getting Your Shot Right – 2017 National Geographic Photography Forum where National Geographic Operation Director (HK) Ivan Tsoi and National Geographic Magazine Chinese Edition Editor-in-Chief Yungshih Lee will share stories along with the winning photographers of the National Geographic International Photo Contest in 2015 and 2016.

Reel Deal: What to see in cinemas this month

There seems to be a common thread uniting some of the films playing in cinemas this month: many of them are adaptations of a book, comic book or TV series. If the original source material is still compelling years later, why not retell the story on the silver screen?

Here are our recommendations for what to see in June:

Wonder Woman

movie1

Wonder Woman is a film adaptation of the popular 1970s TV series about a lasso-throwing, boot-wearing heroine. Diana, an Amazonian princess (the subject of Greek legend), was trained in the ways of the warrior. When an American pilot crashes on their island and shares stories of crisis and conflict, Diana sets foot into the wider world to save humanity and realise her destiny. While the jury is still out, some viewers who attended early screenings called it the best DC film yet.

In cinemas 30 May

Neruda

movie3

The latest biopic about Pablo Neruda – the famous Chilean poet – delves into his earlier days as a politician. The film opens in 1948 in Chile, where Neruda is a senator who has just been impeached and forced into exile to avoid arrest. The film largely centres on the laughable cat-and-mouse chase involving a young policeman who attempts to trail Neruda, who seems to enjoy being pursued. However, die-hard Neruda fans shouldn’t expect a perfect retelling. Director Pablo Larraín (who also directed Jackie, about Jackie Kennedy) takes some liberties with the biographical details.

In cinemas now

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

movie2

Henry Turner, the son of Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), must help rescue his father from a dark curse at sea. The fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean saga also sees the return of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), who helps the crew search for the Trident of Poseidon – the only way to save them all. It’s an entertaining adventure film, so long as you aren’t expecting anything stellar. As one NPR writer put it: “It is the very best fourth sequel ever made to a movie based on a 50-year-old theme park ride.”

In cinemas now

The Sense of an Ending

movie4

This British-American adaptation of Julian Barnes’ novel of the same name is a meditation on memory, regret and the circle of life. Jim Broadbent, who played Professor Slughorn in the Harry Potter movies, plays the lead role of Tony Webster, a reclusive man who receives a letter one day that forces him to confront decisions he made decades ago involving a former friend and lover.

In cinemas 1 June

Andy Warhol_Chinese Bellhop, 1982-1987

American artist Andy Warhol is well-known for his pop art paintings and drawings, but few knew he also took photos. A rare collection of 200 photographs that he snapped in China and Hong Kong during a 1982 trip will go under the hammer, with estimates starting at HK$80,000. According to Jonathan Crockett, deputy chairman of Phillips Asia, “These candid shots are dynamic, exciting and fun but also weighty in their historical importance, as Warhol was able to immortalise China during a transitional phase in the country’s history.”

Last Warrior / The Unknown Soldier by Yoshitomo Nara

Nara_Last Warrior

Valued at between HK$20 million and $30 million, this painting is the star lot of the contemporary art auction. The painting, considered to be Japanese Neo-Pop, depicts an ornery, doll-like girl on a monochrome backdrop. The image invites viewers to recall their youth and tap into their own defiant spirit.

Eating #4 by Zhang Enli

Zhang Enli

This oil on canvas painting is a masterful interpretation of human psychology. It is considered to be one of the best pieces from Enli’s Portrait series. Much of Enli’s work was inspired by German Expressionism, and he endeavoured to depict the inner struggles of ordinary people. The painting’s price estimate is HK$6 million – 8 million.

Patek Philippe Reference 3670 watch

107644

This rare timepiece is one of several Patek Philippe models that will be up for grabs at the watch auction. This stainless steel model has an original 1950’s movement, and it’s one of the brand’s rarest serially produced modern watches. When it was first produced, it was designated an “application” watch, reserved for loyal VIP clients only. Its estimate is HK$4.5 million – 7 million.

Cartier watch

105202-2

For ladies, this gem-encrusted “Tutti Frutti” watch is sure to be an attention-getter. Montblanc collaborates with UNICEF for literacy drive

MB Unicef interactive area

Montblanc, a pioneer in the fountain pen industry, has joined hands with UNICEF to support education programmes around the world.

While education is considered a fundamental right in most countries, studies show that, in practice, 1 in 11 children of school-going age is deprived of education due to poverty, taboos and lack of awareness.

Montblanc has launched the Montblanc for UNICEF collection to help children fulfill their right to education, regardless of their gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic background.

For every item in the collection sold until 31 March 2018, Montblanc will donate 3 percent of the proceeds to UNICEF, with a minimum guaranteed amount of US$1.5 million (HK$11.6 million).

The literacy projects include teacher training programmes, infrastructure building and many more similar projects in China, Djibouti and Brazil.

To help spread awareness about the project, Montblanc is organising an exhibition, workshop and talks at the 1881 Heritage Boutique on 8, 10 and 11 June.

The event, Gift of Writing, provides a platform for children to explore their creativity and learn the art of origami, while parents can attend talks on how to improve their parenting skills.

The public session of the exhibition and workshops will take place on 10 and 11 June from 11:00 am to 6:00pm. The talks on parenting skills will be held on 8 June from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.
