Florentine Affair: The birthplace of the Italian Renaissance

As the birthplace of the Italian Rennaissance, Florence, has long enjoyed a reputation for being among the foremost cultural and economic cities in Europe for centuries, one that continues to the present. Today, though modernity has permeated its borders, there are constant reminders of its rich history, be it the narrow cobblestone paths that meander between the buildings or the iconic monuments that punctuate its acreage.

Florentine Affair The birthplace of the Italian Renaissance gafencu magazine florence

Set amidst rolling hills and verdant fields along the picturesque Arno River, the city of Firenze – to give it its Italian name – was first settled by intrepid Roman legions during the first century BC as a military colony. Across the intervening millennia, it was, in turns, the seat of the Dukes of Tuscany, the Italian capital (1865-70), a republic, and the headquarters of the iconic Medici banking family who ruled the city on and off for almost three centuries.

“Florence has birthed such cultural luminaries as Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dante and Galileo”

Perhaps even more famous than these ruling factions are the artistic and creative visionaries that Florence birthed, including the likes of luminaries such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dante, Galileo and Machiavelli. These were the masters who contributed to the birth of the Italian Renaissance, a period of cultural revival between the 14th and 17th centuries that saw interest in everything from science and sculpture to philosophy and exploration experience a resurgence.

Thanks to the enduring physical legacy left behind by this movement, in 1982, Florence was officially designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, the Tuscan capital boasts a population of just over 380,000 souls, with 5.37 million tourist arrivals recorded in 2018 alone. Most of them visiting to witness the city’s historic and artistic significance such as the bygone eras, and none are more iconic than the Duomo di Firenze, or Florence Cathedral, the large Gothic religious monument famed for its towering dome.

The Duomo was originally designed in 1296, but it wasn’t until 1436 – over a century later – that the cathedral was finally completed.  After standing incomplete for decades, in 1418, the city council announced a design competition for its completion, a commission won by Filippo Brunelleschi thanks to his revolutionary ‘octagonal’ design. Now, it stands 114m high and 45m wide, and is one of Italy’s largest basilicas. The biggest artwork within the cathedral is renowned artist Giorgio Vasari’s frescoes of the Last Judgment (1572-9). In truth, though, they were designed by Vasari but painted mostly by his less-talented student Frederico Zuccari by 1579. Several other features within and around the magnificent cathedral defines true masterpieces of Renaissance art.

Art lovers, meanwhile, can’t miss out on a visit to the Uffizi Palace and Gallery and Gelleria dell’Accademia. The first is located right off Piazza dell Signoria, this world-renowned museum is one of Italy’s most prominent repositories of historical artefacts, including such legendary creations as The Baptism of Christ by Da Vinci, the Adoration of the Magi by Botticelli and the Sacrifice of Isaac by Caravaggio.

The Galleria dell’Accademia was set in the shadows of the Florence Cathedral. Despite its innocuous exteriors, this seemingly-humble building is actually home to some masterpieces of Renaissance art. Key among these, of course, is the original David sculpture, the iconic statue crafted by Leonardo Da Vinci and now known across the globe.

For a welcome outdoor reprieve, one could do far worse than meander Arno River. Here you’ll find yet another historic relic – the Ponte Vecchio, an ancient bridge said to date back to 996 AD connects the two banks. Today, its interiors are awash with art dealers, jewellery shops and souvenir vendors, but if you stop midway through, you will be rewarded with direct views down the Arno.

If you’re famished from your Florentine escapades, the local culinary scene will not disappoint. As the Tuscan capital, its streets are awash with eateries serving iconic regional dishes. A must-have is Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a large t-bone cut weighing anywhere from 1-4kg, fire-grilled on the outside and pink and bloody on the inside, seasoned with salt, pepper, a squeeze of lemon and traditionally cooked over roasted chestnuts for a smoky flavour. Whatever you do, do not ask the chef to cook the steak to your liking. You wouldn’t want to offend the chef or the Florentine tradition as Florentine steak is made one way, and one way only. Pair your meal with a bottle of Tuscan red and toast to a city well and truly explored.

Ajanta and Ellora: India’s iconic religious caves

A treasure trove of historical monuments, the Ajanta and Ellora Caves number among UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites and are two of the Seven Wonders of India. A monument to human ingenuity and perseverance, they took centuries to finish.

Settled some 9,000 years ago, India is not only one of the world’s oldest civilisations, it also boasts one of the richest cultural traditions. Nowhere is this more evident than in its religious history. After all, the nation was the birthplace for four now-iconic faiths: Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. Although worshippers spread across the globe, there is one region in particular that remains an enduring hallmark of their inception.

The Ajanta and Ellora Caves are celebrated as one of the best examples of rock cave architecture in India, the Ajanta and Ellora Caves – lying some 95km apart from each other – are situated in the state of Maharashtra near the city of Aurangabad and have been worshipped for over a millennium.

The Ajanta Caves boast roughly 300 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments across 29 caves, all of which were constructed between the 2nd century BC and 6th century AD. Using only chisels and hammers, Buddhist monks carved directly into the cliff face of the Sahyadri Hills. These caves include paintings, murals, sculptures that illustrate the previous life of Buddha. This form of literature is known as the Jataka Tales, and is primarily native to India.

The Ajanta Caves, comprising solely Buddhist caves, stood unknown until it was accidentally rediscovered in 1819 by a young British cavalry officer, John Smith. Spotting the mouth of a cave above the Waghora (Tiger) River, he entered and discovered the statue of a Bodhisattva, a figure representing one of the past lives of the Buddha before he achieved Nirvana. On it, Smith carved his name. Since then, thousands of tourists have followed suit.

While the Ajanta Caves have some of India’s most sophisticated ancient paintings, the Ellora Caves are renowned for their extraordinary architecture, having been crafted entirely by hand. It occupies a flat rocky region on the Western Ghats, where the geology of the landscape was shaped by volcanic activity, creating a multi0layed basalt formation known as the Deccan Traps. The resulting steep vertical surface layered with rock formations enabling the architects of the time to carve the stone for more detailed sculpting.

The area comprises 34 caves in total featuring a mixture of 12 Buddhist (caves 1–12), 17 Hindu (caves 13–29) and 5 Jain (caves 30–34) caves, as well as monasteries dedicated to each religion. The Buddhist caves were built during the Chalukya dynasty (500-1100 AD), the Hindu caves by the Rashtrakuta dynasty (500-900 AD) and the Jaina caves by the Yadava dynasty (860-1317 AD). Though the earliest caves may have been built during the dynasties of the Traikutakas (388 and 456 AD) and the Vakataka (250-270 AD), the latter also being known for sponsoring the Ajanta caves.

Kailasa Temple also known as Kailasha Temple

A key draw here is undoubtedly the incredible Kailasa Temple (also known as the Kailasha Temple), dedicated to Lord Shiva and his sacred abode at Mount Kailasha. Its immense size covers twice the area of the Parthenon in Athens and is one and a half times as tall. So great is its acreage that its true size can only be taken in when viewed at a distance.

Bibi Ka Maqbara, lying between the Ajanta and Ellora caves in Aurangabad

Lying between the two ancient religious cave complex lies yet another stunning example of Indian architecture, albeit one from a more recent era – the Bibi Ka Maqbara. Loosely translating to “Tomb of the Lady”, it was commissioned by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1660 as a tribute to his chief wife, Dilras Banu Begum. Dubbed by some as a miniature Taj Mahal, the similiarities are undeniable, and perhaps understandable when you consider the fact that the Taj Mahal was similarly commissioned by Aurangzeb 30 years previously upon the death of his mother.

The central marble-dominant mausoleum, featuring four towering turrets, is further ringed with a tranquil open garden, standing in stark contrast to Ajanta and Ellora’s dimly-lit caverns – a fact that visitors are sure to enjoy.

Although there are a handful of accomodations on site near all three locations, many offer only basic amenities. For a more luxurious option, a handful of high-end establishments can be found in Aurangabad city. While this does mean several hours of transit time to and from the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, hotels such as, Vivanta Aurangabad, a five-star outpost of the venerable Indian luxury brand, Taj Hotels & Resorts will offer well-heeled travellers with a more luxurious experience.

Ghentish Charm: Meandering waterways, cobblestone streets and medieval architecture, this Belgian city has it all.

To say that Belgium has more than its fair share of iconic cities is something of an understatement. After all, the tiny 11.46 million-strong nation boasts such notables as Brussels, home of the European Parliament, Bruges, the picturesque town dubbed the “Venice of the North”, and Antwerp, long the country’s historic diamond and Art Deco hotspot. However, few would call to mind Ghent, the Northern Belgian city that encompasses the most historical classified buildings in the country, including three monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The second largest city in the Flemish region of Belgium, Ghent is home to just under 250,000 souls, yet it attracts millions of tourists each year, many drawn by its vibrant art, history and architectural charm. Although the area was first settled during the Stone Age, it wasn’t until 650 AD, when Saint Armand, a bishop of Tongeren-Maastricht and a renowned Flemish missionary, founded two abbeys at Ghent when the town truly flourished. By the 13th century, it had grown to such an extent that it was the biggest European city after Paris, overtaking such cosmopolitan hubs as Moscow and Cologne. By the Renaissance Era, thanks to a booming wool trade,  the town had transformed into one of the richest cities on the European continent.

Today, Ghent is just a 45-minute train ride from Brussels, the Belgian capital. Boasting beautiful castles, glistening canals, intriguing architecture and a plethora of culinary delights, there is truly plenty to see and do in this port city. If you’re looking for a place to base your sightseeing, the city’s gothic splendour has been channelled expertly into what was the old post office, right on the city’s famous mediaeval quay, the Graslei.

1898 The Post is a brooding boutique hotel bristling with fairytale turrets and tall windows overlooking the canal. Postal paraphernalia such as writing bureaus and antique pencil cases can be found in the hallways and deliciously dark-walled rooms – all of it reassuringly kitsch-free. Socialise over cocktails in the Cobbler or fix a drink and settle in with some Edgar Allan Poe in the turret-set honesty bar, replete with rows of leather-bound tomes and stag beetles in glass cases.

Once you’re ready to begin your explorations in earnest, a good place to start would be the Gravensteen castle. Built in 1180, it was subsequently re-purposed as a court, prison, mint, and even as a cotton factory. It was restored over 1893–1903 and is now a museum and a major landmark in the city. Its latest iteration houses the Arms Museum and the Museum of Judicial Objects, allowing intrepid visitors a first-hand glimpse at the weapons and torture devices used in medieval times. Make sure to visit the rooftop of this stone fortress, for the 360-degree views to be had which are are some of the most picture-worthy in Ghent.

Another historic monument worthy of a stopover is St Bavo’s Cathedral, an 11th century religious structure where Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor was baptised. Here you’ll find the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb altarpiece, a stunning relic painted by such great masters as Hubert and Jan van Eyck in the 15th century. For more picturesque vistas, head over to the iconic Ghent Belfry, a stunning 91m-high structure listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tallest belfry in the country, its magnificent gothic architecture is awe-inspiring to behold, replete with copper dragon that has been guarding the city since the 14th century.

Meanwhile, art lovers could do far worse than to venture to DOK, a temporary cultural project in a large area where the old harbour and the border of the city flow into each other – empty warehouses, some slightly out-of-place apartment blocks and the odd second-hand car dealer. Together with DOK neighbourhood residents and local artists, it promotes arts, culture and sports initiatives … It even had a row-in cinema, where everyone was watching Jaws on small boats in front of a big screen on the water. Art hub Democracy, meanwhile, takes care of the live music shows, and you can also find SECONDROOM Ghent there, a gallery concept where cutting edge contemporary artists show their work.

“Millions of tourists are lured  to Ghent by its vibrant art, history and architecture”

Ghent also has a vibrant street art scene, featuring the likes of artist Bue the Warrior and his joyous, colourful creatures, and the enigmatic Roa with his dark, black-and-white animals. Their work can be seen on walls all over town, often in collaboration with other less well-known painters. One particular wall, at the junction of Sleepstraat, Grauwpoort and Rodelijvekensstraat, marks the location where almost all the Ghent street kings have made a big tableau together and is a fantastic Instagram spot, should you wish to click a picture.

If you’re understandably hungry after all that sightseeing, fear not, for Ghent boasts plenty of signature dishes to fill your stomach and soul. In the city and other East Flanders areas, many bakeries offer a donut-shaped bun called a “mastel”, which is basically akin to a bagel. Mastellen are also called “Saint Hubert bread”, because on the Saint’s feast day, which is 3 November, the bakers bring their batches to early Mass to be blessed.

Other local delicacies are the praline chocolates from famous local chocolatiers such as Leonidas, the cuberdons or ‘neuzekes’ (‘noses’), cone-shaped purple jelly-filled candies, ‘babelutten’ (‘babblers’), hard butterscotch-like candy, and of course, on the more fiery side, the famous ‘Tierenteyn’, a hot but refined mustard that has some affinity to French ‘Dijon’ mustard and is sure to have your taste buds tingling.

Stoverij, a classic Flemish meat stew, is another dish you can’t miss. Preferably made with a generous addition of brown Trappist beer and served with French fries, it offers a wholesome, filling dish to satiate your hunger. Waterzooi is another local stew to try, originally made from freshwater fish caught in the rivers and creeks of Ghent, but nowadays often made with chicken instead of fish. It is usually served nouvelle-cuisine-style, and offers a lighter alternative to the stoverij.

“Many jetsetters have been entranced by Ghent’s unique past-meets-present charm”

Of course, no visit to Ghent would be complete without a pint or two of the famed local Belgian beers. In particular, the Trappist beers, brewed to this day by abbey monks, is a must-have. From stunning medieval castles, awe-inspiring Gothic architecture, and quaint cobbled streets to the vibrant art and culinary hotspots that punctuate this Belgian city, Ghent is a place that continues to celebrate its unique history, while still having its eye firmly on modernity. This unique past-meets-present charm is exactly why Ghent has entranced so many jetsetters over the years.

“El Nido’s sights and sounds take urbanites on an exciting nature adventure where technology is nowhere to be seen”

Holidaymakers will almost inevitably be enamoured with the rustic and natural allure of El N ido, cited as one of the “Best Resorts in the World” in the 2018 edition of Conde Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards.

Located in the west Philippine island province of Palawan, which faces the South China Sea, El Nido never fails to endear with its stunning white sand beachs and crystal clear blue waters that are ideal for snorkelling enthusiasts. Explorers willing to travel a little further will even discover small islands comprised of limestone rock formations that jut hundreds of meters above water, forming jaw-dropping natural vistas.

Guided tours of these islands near the El Nido municipality is a staple offered by numerous travel agencies. Tour costs hardlypinch the pocket, starting as low as just 500 Philippine pesos or US$10 per person.

Taking in the sights and sounds of these island affords urbanites an exhilarating and refreshing adventure back to nature, where technology is nowhere to be seen. The tours usually include a sumptuous lunch comprising assorted grilled fresh seafood served on a makeshift table on the sandy white beach in one of the islands on the itinerary. Fresh coconut juice – not canned drinks – often accompany these meals as a refreshing pick-me-up.

Every year, tens of thousands of visitors from Europe, North America, Asia Pacific, as well as the Philippines, troop to El Nido, elevating the holiday resort municipality to the privileged status of being among the top holiday resort  destinations in the world.

For convenience, well-heeled travellers can charter a private Lear Jet or any other aircraft from Manila that will fly them directly to El Nido or to the international airport at Palawan’s capital city of Puerto Princesa. From Puerto Princesa, visitors can then proceed by boat short distances away to any one of the various upmarket island resorts that dot El Nido’s coastline.

In particular, the Pangulasian Island Resort ranks among the best of the choices on offer, and is often a favourite of high-end jetsetters. A five-star hotel under the Small Luxury Hotels of the World Group, it enjoys a stellar location adjacent to a forest, making it ideal to nature lovers. Each one of the villas at Pangulasian Island Resort is built in contemporary Filipino design. It offers eight Canopy Villas – all perched on stilts above the forest – and 24 Beach Villas facing the beach  and its pristine waters. The latter even offers close proximity to the resort’s infinity pool, bar and poolside grill – perfect for a noon meal or a sunset drink.

Matinloc Resort El Nido, another luxury resort option on Matinloc Island, offers all essential amenities, including free Wi-Fi in all rooms, 24-hour security, daily housekeeping, and private check in /check out. Cauayan Island Resort is a third attractive option for upmarket holidaymakers. Its website describes the complex as a luxury resort comparable to a paradise of tranquility and haven of comfort as it provides a perfectly serene lifestyle vacation.

While luxury resorts off El Nido municipality are highly-favoured destinations, first-timers to the island should not miss an awe-inspiring and uniquely magnificent must-see natural phenomenon in the town proper.

Vacation Island The Philippines’ El Nido gafencu magazine feature travel

Upon reaching the town centre, the first thing any visitor will see is undoubtedly the towering 1,200m-high limestone rock formation. Rising at an impressive 90-degree angle from the ground, these geological features are covered with lush vegetation and stretch across several kilometres, lying a mere stone’s throw from the town’s residential and commerical hubs.

“Old folks here at El Nido often say that the rock formation was below sea water several thousand years ago. But as the sea level receded over time, that rock formation steadily emerged out of the water,” says El Nido municipal administrator Rene Jay de la Calzada. “That spectacle is immensely popular among first-time foreign and local tourists. I’ve been told there’s nothing like it elsewhere in the Philippines or even across the world,” he adds.

“ The government prohibits rock climbing, but that doesn’t deter the adventurous…”

Tourist guide Noel Velasco agrees, commenting that the towering limestone rock formation often intrigues and attracts a unique bunch of thrill-seeking and intrepid holidaymakers, specifically of the daring mountain climbing variety.

“The municipal government prohibits rock climbing because of the obvious risks to health and safety,” he says. “But this ban hasn’t deterred adventurous and thrill-seeking tourists, mostly from Western countries, from asking around here for people like us who can guide them up that rock formation,” Velasco adds.

“We don’t mind giving them a hand on the sly because we earn extra bucks. Besides, my fellow tourist guides and I also wish to make their stay here more exciting and memorable.”

Vacation Island The Philippines’ El Nido gafencu magazine feature travel 3

A more legal though no less heart-racing approach to climbing the cliffs, though, is to try the Canopy Walk at Taraw Cliff. Here, the canopy bridge stretches some 74 metres and lies suspeded 30m high. Although it requires some steep climbs, the view from the top affords some of El Nido’s best photo opportunities.

It’s sights like these that have seen the island’s popularity truly soar on an international scale. Calzada says nearly 50,000 tourists, mostly foreigners, visited El Nido in 2018 alone, and he expects the number to go up further, especially after the Conde Nast Traveler boost.

“That kind of favourable publicity in the international media will certainly go a long way in driving up further foreign and local tourist arrivals here. The provincial government is actually gearing up for a further uptrend in visitor arrivals and more and more infrastructures are now being built,” says Calzada.

Vacation Island The Philippines’ El Nido gafencu magazine feature travel 5

“For instance, a new airport will be set up in a next-door municipality by 2023 or 2024, and this will vastly facilitate travel here of tourists from Manila and other parts of the country. By then, holidaymakers will be spared the hassle of a tiring long road trip from Puerto Princesa,” he adds.

El Nido town – comparable to Tai Po old town in the New Territories minus all the high-rise residential blocks and Sun Hung Kai Properties’ large shopping mall – provides nearly everything that visitors need.

Vacation Island The Philippines’ El Nido gafencu magazine feature travel 2

Restaurants, though mostly small, are numerous. They include those that offer Western cuisine and popular Filipino dishes. Typical meals are inexpensive and a slightly fancy dinner, for instance, of several popular local dishes for four in a Filipino restaurant costs about 3,000 Philippine pesos or roughly US$60. Fine dining eateries are something of a rare breed on El Nido, as most restaurants, including pizza parlours, are small-scale and family-style.

This homely appeal, when added to El Nido’s stunning natural beauty and plethora of sightseeing hotspots, it’s small wonder that many include the island as among their top vacation getaway destinations.

From hosting launch parties to taking the kids out for an adventure family weekend trip, there is a variety of things that a yacht can offer beyond lounging under the sun and enjoying beautiful scenery.

Smaller yachts such as catamarans and sail boats like those available for charter at Next Wave Charters are great when you’re hopping around nearby islands. This type of sloop is perfect for lounging outdoors or spending the afternoon on a fishing trip with a couple of close friends. It’s a more intimate experience that allows you to detach from the city life and reconnect with loved ones. Prices start from HKD $22,500.

Super yachts, on the other hand, goes beyond the weekend getaway. Perfect for a customizable itinerary that involves visiting the pristine beaches of Phuket or Vietnam for four days and more on a luxury boat with a full crew to service your luxurious family holiday. Prices are subject to the itinerary, but you can be looking at spending at least HKD $200, 000. Ocean Emerald offers journeys to various popular destinations around Asia.

Ideally, motor yachts, also known as power yachts, are smaller than super yachts but are more versatile than catamarans and sailboats. They are the perfect setting for day trips with a group of friends or the whole family, where you can have fun in the sun with wake boards and jet skis. Prices start from HKD $160,000 (excluding amenities and catering) and can be chartered through Saffron-Cruises or Asiamarine.

Po Toi Island

As if just a speck on the map of the city, is actually a hidden gem in itself, a small island with gorgeous coastal views that not many other islands in the city can offer. Along the rocky coastlines is a gorgeous abundance of quiet waters and green terrain which at the end of the trail concludes with a seafood meal at the nearby restaurants by the pier.

Po Lo Shan (Pineapple Mountain)

Starting from within the residential estate of Leung King Estate, the path will lead you beyond fences and into a wooded area towards an uphill trail. The trail leads to what is known to locals as the “Grand Canyon” of Hong Kong.

Shing Mun Reservoir

The paved path of this New Territories reservoir stretches through a green forest of towering trees and past a few picnic spots towards the northern point of the reservoir. There lies a stream, which during dry seasons, exposes a picturesque landscape of Chinese banyan trees along the shoreline.

Ping Nam Stream

Nam Chung Country trail hides away many of its mini pools, but none like Ping Nam stream which the trail eventually leads you down to lower than most have gone. Unsurprisingly, this might take some effort to get to, but at the end of it lies a beautiful gorgeous infinity pool atop a short waterfall.

Tung Ping Chau

Perhaps the easiest hike on this list is this crescent-shaped island. The trail encircles the island’s shoreline with unique rock formations. Although the youngest rocks in Hong Kong, it is also the most unique across the region, cemented with the mixture of organic particles and minerals into sedimentary rocks.

Cape D’Aguilar

One of Hong Kong’s best-kept secrets is the Hok Tsui beacon, a historic lighthouse along the coastal shores of southern Shek O, which towers over sea-blue waters. Further on from the cape, the trail continues along several photogenic rocky shorelines and caves. Above, long after the sun has set, the sky transforms into a breathtaking blanket of stars, making this spot an amazing location for stargazing.

“Beyond the mediocrity” — This location has been one of my most favourite places to be in hong kong for its uniqueness and beauty compare to all other suburb areas in the city. From different caves to lighthouse. From waterfronts to cliff sides. All exotic spots united into the only one and the wholly one- Cape D’ Aguilar. . . . . . . . . . #stayandwander #voyaged #fatalframes #folkvibes #traveldestinations_ig #theglobalwanderer #destination_wow #earthpix #beautifuldestinations #natgeoyourshot #natgeotravel #natgeoasia #travelgram #travelphotography #travelaroundtheworld #旅遊 #conservationhk #igdaily #ig_masterpiece #theimaged #illgrammers #meistershots #shotzdelight #hongkong #awesomehongkong #hkigers #nikonhongkong #discoverhongkong #l4bhktory #urbex
