Fairer Secs: Making time for the ladies with these femme-focused timepieces

In the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t all that long ago that women’s watches were something an afterthought, largely uninspired designs with only the most basic of functions. They were, indeed, poor relations to the ever-more stunning, complex and precise pieces that constituted chap-oriented chronometers. This was, of course, because the majority of horological houses were solely preoccupied with churning out macho statement timepieces in the belief that men would always be the primary purchasers of high-end horological items.

Best of femme-focused timepieces

That, of course, has all changed over the course of the last 10 years, with the more elegant lady watch-loving collectors now accounting for a significant proportion of international timepiece sales. As a consequence, the watchmaking industry has risen to the challenge of reinventing the outdated design aesthetics and mechanics that once characterised the watches-for-women sector. Indeed, gone are the days when petite, nondescript wrist accessories were deemed to suffice. In their place is a new generation of intricate, chronologically advanced mechanisms that are more than a match for their male counterparts in terms of stature. Of these, we’d recommend six femme-focused timepieces for your particular perusal…

Femme-focused timepieces - Breguet Marine Dame 9518
Breguet Marine Dame 9518

First up is Breguet, with its all-new Marine Dame 9518 encapsulating a cool aquatic aesthetic. This is largely thanks to its beautifully hand-guillochéd wave-motif blue mother-of-pearl dial, fetchingly enhanced with a diamond-set bezel. Under the hood, the balance spring, escape wheel and lever have been ably crafted from ultra-lightweight silicon, with the self-winding Calibre 591A movement – visible through the transparent sapphire crystal caseback – extending to powering a date indicator. Water resistant to 50m, blue leather straps complete its memorably maritime appeal.

Femme-focused timepieces - IWC Portofino Automatic 34
IWC Portofino Automatic 34

Another unusual design comes courtesy of renowned Swiss watchmaker IWC in the form of its defiantly distinct Portofino Automatic 34. Boasting an 18K 5N gold case ringed with 92 diamonds, its dial is all entrancingly silver-plated and fetchingly embossed, bestowing upon it a glamorously glittering sheen. Powering this 34mm style icon is a Calibre 35100 movement, complete with a 42-hour power reserve. Four other fresh-out-of-the-workshop models of the Portofino 34 are also available, all with an easy quick strap change system, giving wearers the option of matching a different look to their particular mood.

Femme-focused timepieces - Zenith Elite Moonphase
Zenith Elite Moonphase

Looking more aloft for inspiration, meanwhile, is Swiss manufacturer Zenith’s Elite Moonphase. With its silvery white dial burnished with a sunray-patterned motif, it comes neatly punctuated with a small running seconds hand at the nine o’clock slot. Housed in a slimly-elegant rose gold case and ringed with a diamond-set bezel, the jewel in its particular crown is undoubtedly its blue six-o’clock-set moonphase indicator.

Femme-focused timepieces - Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso One Duetto
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso One Duetto

In a departure from the usual circular case scenario, Jaeger-LeCoultre opted for a rectangular frame for its new Reverso One Duetto. Taking its inspiration from an earlier ’30s innovation, this red-hued hour-tracker was conceived with flexibility very much in mind. Its front face, restrained yet refined, is just about perfect for everyday wear, while its reverse side is all opulent elegance, led by a shimmering burgundy lacquered dial with the hour markers stretching outwards sunray-style.

Femme-focused timepieces - Jaquet Droz Lady 8 Petite Ruby Heart
Jaquet Droz Lady 8 Petite Ruby Heart

Similarly opting for a bold scarlet style is the delicate Lady 8 Petite Ruby Heart, the latest offering from Jaquet Droz. Available in a limited edition of just 28, it measures a mere 25mm in diameter, but its diminutive dimensions are more than made up for by the intricacies of its design. Ringed with diamonds and set in a rose gold case, this alluring piece of rococo wrist enhancement is crafted in the brand’s iconic figure-eight form. Its lower half is all minimal grace, with its ruby heart dial featuring solely hour and minute hands. The upper segment, by contrast, is all whimsical flourish, while housing a ruby ball bearing that swivels freely in line with any movement of the wrist.

Femme-focused timepieces - Panthère de Cartier Watch
Panthère de Cartier Watch

In the coveted number six slot on our list of femme-focused timepieces comes one of the most outré lady’s timepiece currently on offer – Cartier’s all-new Panthère de Cartier Watch, a tribute to the marque’s much-feted twin expertise in fashioning fine jewellery and watchmaking. The watch proper – a 22mm wide yellow gold case with a gem-set bezel and diamond hour marker – comes mounted with the inevitable bejewelled panther, an iconic Cartier emblem since 1914. Arresting, attention-grabbing and unabashedly conspicuous, it stands as an apt homage to the indomitable spirit of womankind.

New day and night editions of MB&F Legacy Machine FlyingT

Breaking with the more conventional femme-focused timepiece designs, horology marque Maximilian Busser and Friends, popularly known as MB&F, introduced its Legacy Machine FlyingT – its first every model for women – at the starting of 2019.

Proudly accoladed with the Prix de la Complication pour Dame award at the prestigious 2019 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, the watches are replete with intricately engineered details and dazzlingly avant-garde stylings.

Legacy Machine FlyingT

Then available in three versions – Black Lacquer, Pavée and Baguette –  the Swiss label has recently launched two more iterations of the Legacy Machine FlyingT – a black dial in a 18K red gold case that is reminiscent of night, and a light blue avatar housed in a platinum 950 case that is inspired by day.

Moreover, these guilloché dials,  crafted by the horology maison’s long-standing collaborator Kari Voutilainen, serve to further enhance the centrepiece of it’s design, its eponymous feature – the tourbillon.

Legacy Machine FlyingT

Adding to it, the small white-lacquered dial is placed at an inclination of 50° allowing only the user to see the time – thus improving the personal touch.

Limited to 18 pieces of each colour, these Legacy Machine FlyingT watches have a power reserve of 100 hours.

Snow Signs: Five decades of the Snowflakes timepieces by Tudor

One of the many factors that makes a brand stand out is the iconic component that is unique to its identity. For the Swiss horology brand Tudor, this exclusive element is undoubtedly the Snowflakes emblem – angular hand needles with square shaped hour calibres, which has been featured on countless timepieces across the decades.

Snowflakes

Originally introduced on two diving watches in 1969, this innovation allowed watch manufacturers to add luminescence to it – resulting in timepieces that are legible in any given lighting condition and fitting for the house’s tagline #BornToDare.

Snowflakes

In the decades to follow, Snowflakes became well-known not only among watch collectors, but amassed new followers among the divers of navy forces from all over the world including France, Canada, Italy, who all started sporting timepieces that featured this specification by Tudor.

Snowflakes

Initially a configuration that appeared only on diving watches, the high-end Swiss watchmaker later reinforced this unique element on its Black Bay and Pelagos models that were launched at the Baselworld 2012.

Fast forward to fifty years from its very first appearance, Snowflakes has continued to be one of Tudor’s defining features that is immediately recognised by watch aficionados globally.

Second Prizes: Worthy winning timepieces from this year’s Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve

Every year, pretty much anyone with a senior enough role in keeping the global watchmaking sector ticking over descends upon Geneva for the ever-illustrious Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve (GPHG) awards. Founded in 2001 and now one of team timepiece’s preeminent tournaments, it sees the world’s leading haute horology houses all keenly competing to be crowned as creators of the most finely-crafted, most ambitious and most high-tech bit of haute horology of the year.

For the 2019 event, a bumper crop of 84 high-end chronograms went before a 30-strong jury of the wisest of watchmen, who were then tasked with winkling out the winners in each of the 18 keenly-contested categories. Of the timepieces triumphant, six stood out as particularly meriting top horological honours…

Aiguille D’Or Grand Prix

The preeminent performer at this year’s event was undoubtedly Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin. The world’s thinnest perpetual calendar watch, its movement has a depth of just 2.89mm, a cunning bit of compression brought to be by merging the three traditional layers of the perpetual calendar mechanism into just one component. This marvel of precision engineering even required the devisement of two new bits of tech – both subsequently patented – an end-of-the-month cam integrated into the date wheel and a combination month wheel / cam.  Indeed, it would be hard to think of a worthier winner of the Aiguille d’Or Grand Prix, the competition’s highest honour,

Innovation Prize

Another award-winner – and another to feature a perpetual calendar complication – was Swiss marque Vacheron Constantin, with its Traditionelle Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar rightfully winning GPHG’s Innovation Prize. Blending formidable aesthetic appeal with remarkable functionality, its flexibility is its greatest asset. In active use, its Calibre 3610 QP movement oscillates at a singularly high frequency, driving the hour, minute, date, month and leap year cycle indicators with outstanding precision. Off-wrist, it powers down, extending its power reserve to at least 65 days.

Ladies’ Complication Watch Prize

Avant-garde maison MB&F’s first-ever ladies’ watch – the Legacy Machine FlyingT – soared straight to the top this year, clinching the Ladies’ Complication Watch Prize on its maiden outing. Its accentuated crystal dome and dazzlingly diamond-studded fascia have been cunningly designed to ensure its movement and its centrally-mounted flying tourbillon are ably highlighted. Its subsidiary dial, meanwhile, nestles against this array at an unusual 50-degree angle, ensuring the ensemble remains quirky yet undeniably chic. Overall, it’s a design classic and a true statement timepiece for any avid collector of femininely-fashioned timepieces,

Men’s Complication Watch Prize

Audemars Piguet returned to the fray and secured a second accolade with its Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Minute Repeater Supersonnerie winning hands down in the Men’s Complication Watch Prize category. Despite its stunning blue-on-white gold motif, it still remains remarkably minimalist in style. Underneath its smoked-blue enamel dial, however, its manual-winding movement is the height of mechanical sophistication, partly on account of its subtle incorporation of cutting-edge minute repeater supersonnerie technology – an innovation that notably amplifies its signature chime. In addition, its outer caseback has even been tactically perforated in order to admirably enhance its acoustics.

Men’s Watch Prize

In the case of the Finnish watchmaker Kari Voutilainen, its 28ti timepiece certainly had the wow factor as far as the GPHG jury were concerned. Attention-grabbing pretty much to the max, the ‘ti’ in its epithet stands for ‘titanium inverse’, a reference to both its premium case material and the fact that its handmade movement has been inversely fitted to allow direct viewing through its transparent caseback. Beautifully skeletonised, its front fascia has also been expertly optimised, with showcasing the watch’s elegant inner workings clearly a priority. Crafted wholly in-house, its elegance and technological prowess made it popular winner of the Men’s Watch Prize.

Mechanical Exception Watch Prize

The first production chronogram from Swiss marque Genus – the GNS1.2, winner of the Mechanical Exception Watch Prize at this year’s GPHG – proved a true revelation in the art of contemporary watchmaking, one that highlighted the intrinsic relationship between form and function – albeit with a decidedly outré twist. With its traditional hour markers set on a rotating ring, with an hour indicator fitted at 9 O’clock, it also features two minute rings, artfully connected by a serpentine chain that embraces them in that ever-lucky figure-of-eight pattern. Limited to a release of – unsurprisingly – eight pieces, the GNS1.2 ably blends traditional watchmaking conventions with a wholly contemporary appeal, making it – as with the other rightfully-celebrated timepieces – a truly worthy winner.

Best dressed men at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards

Hot on the heels of our pick of the best dressed ladies at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, we did not forget about the best dressed men at the event. Be it a classic black and white tuxedo or a custom-made outfit, the men of Hollywood sure know how to make a fashionable statement on the red carpet. Below, we review the best dressed men at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards.

Ansel Elgort

Like Ansel Elgort’s impromptu singing, when he presented the award for Best Original Song – Motion Picture, his outfit also caught our attention at the Golden Globes. For the event, the Baby Driver actor ditched the usual black and white colour scheme and went for a dark blue velvet suit with a pale blue evening shirt by the American fashion brand Tom Ford, pairing it with navy William Tassel loafers. Moreover, the Tiffany Enchant® butterfly brooch made of diamonds and sapphires elevated his look further.

Nick Jonas

Best dressed men at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards

When celebrity power couple Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra went on stage to present the Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy award, their collective ensembles were both minimalistic and on point. The Jonas Brother opted for a black silk dinner suit by the Italian fashion maison Prada and completed it with a Saffiano necklace in place of a regular tie. He accessorised his look with an Octo watch decorated with diamonds and a ring made of sapphire and tanzanite – both designed by the high-end jewellery brand BVLGARI.

Nicholas Braun

Best dressed men at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards

‘Less is more’ is the right way to describe Nicholas Braun – the actor of Succession, the show which won the Best Television series award – on the red carpet. Donning a navy two-buttoned tuxedo along with a black satin bow tie by the fashion house Prada, his sartorial style was appealingly clean-cut. Moreover, he is another celebrity who made it to our list of best dressed men at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards for not choosing to wear the old school black tuxedo. Besides, the toned down colour contrast of his outfit was one of our favourite things about his look.

Taron Egerton

Best dressed men at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards

While we may have stressed on choosing a colour other than black, we still can’t deny that a perfectly tailored black and white suit is more classy and timeless. Similar to other famous celebrities like Brad Pitt and Leonardo Caprio, the winner of the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy award, Taron Egerton, also went for this classic look. Egerton, who won the award for his amazing acting in the film Rocketman, finished his look with a Montblanc Star Legacy Full Calendar watch.

Saving the best for the last, we have the Best Performance by an Actor – Television Series nominee Billy Porter. Since the time he went viral for wearing a dress to the 2019 Oscars, we’re always on the lookout to see what he wears on the red carpet next. This time too, he became one of the most stylish men at the event with his all-white custom made Alex Vinash suit that he paired with white Jimmy Choo boots. According to an Instagram post made by the Pose actor, the theme of his look was “BLAQUE SWAN” and his colour of choice symbolised “peace, hope, and new beginnings.” He completed his look with accessories from the American jewellery brand Tiffany & Co. – a Tiffany diamond necklace, a Tiffany Dragonfly Brooch and Tiffany T rings. The fashionista elevated his look further with a Ludlow clutch by the New York based designer brand Emm Kuo.
