Coupe Coup: Ancient Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato sells for HK$102 million

A car with as chequered a past as the 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT MP209 Zagato Grand Touring Two-Seat Coupe would undoubtedly be the Holy Grail for any true auto-enthusiast. Unsurprisingly then, it proved one of the biggest draws at the recently-concluded Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale, going for HK$102 million after a protracted bidding war.

1961 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato sells for HK$102 million

It’s an unsurprising valuation for such a unique car. Not only is it one of just 20 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagatos ever produced, it’s also one of only three Zagatos with the ‘MP209’ specification – a testimony to its lightness – that the marque ever built. Add to that its distinctive UK road-registration number plate – 2 VEV – and it’s probably the most distinctive competition coupe to have ever come out of the highly-competitive Essex Racing Stable.

An ancient Aston Martin DB4GT was recently sold at auction

This quasi-works team car – the chassis of which proved to be the prototype for later racing cars – had a mixed record on the track, however. While it recorded a spectacular win at the 1961 British Grand Prix, it overheated and malfunctioned at the Le Mans 24-Hours Race later that year. Eventually, the Aston Marton DB4GT Zagato became a concours regular, much admired for its spectacular history and groundbreaking design.

Adam Waters of Princess Yachts on hand-crafted designs and investment tips

Princess Yachts, the renowned luxury boat builder, weighed anchor in Hong Kong yesterday for its Annual Rendezvous with owners, industry insiders and friends of the brand. We interviewed Adam Waters, General Manager of Princess Yachts Greater China, to get the inside scoop on the Asian yachting market and some top tips on buying a boat of your very own.

All-new Princess R35 to be launched at Cannes Yachting Festival (11-16 Sept)

What sets Princess Yachts apart from other luxury yacht manufacturers?

I believe there are many things, although if I would to narrow it down to 3 points they would be:

Performance – Princess Yachts has always been at the forefront of designing strong, fast, sea-worthy hulls utilising the latest construction methods and materials.  As an example, at the Cannes Yachting Festival, we launched a revolutionary carbon fibre day boat with a unique foiling system that was designed in partnership with the BAR land Rover America’s cup racing team.

Build Quality – Handcrafting yachts for over 50 years in South West England gives you a unique advantage over the competition, and the experience and skill of our 3,500-strong workforce translates into the beautiful yachts, both inside and out.

Design – Princess Yachts is part of the LVMH group which gives us a unique opportunity and access to some of the world’s most famous fashion houses. Last year we built a custom project – a 88ft motor yacht with full Hermes Interiors – and we are now working on a Fendi Casa project for 2020… Although I can’t reveal too much on that for the moment, just watch this space…

How important is Hong Kong as a market for Princess Yachts and why?

The Hong Kong and China markets are extremely important for Princess Yachts. We have experienced exceptional growth over the past 3 years and the short / medium term outlook is very bright. The boating culture is relatively established and continually growing in Hong Kong compared to some other areas in Asia, while also boasting the largest ultra-wealthy population globally. With the city primed for larger yachts, Hong Kong will be a perfect launch platform to release some of our exciting new models.

What trends do you see in the Asian markets in terms of buying luxury yachts?

The market is certainly growing, and the trend is for larger yachts that offer generous internal space, big fly bridges and comprehensive stabilization options. Fortunately our vessels ticks all those boxes and much more!

 Princess Yachts 30m

Can you share three tips for investors looking to purchase a luxury yacht?

Firstly, purchase through a builder / local distributor that has the skills to deliver what they promise, in terms of customization, service and quality. Also, find a local team with strong service, backup and support systems. I suggest any potential owner to talk to existing customers of the brand to understand how their experience has been as well. Finally, don’t just shop on discount. More often than not, as with anything else, if the price seems too good to be true there is usually a reason for it.

Thank you.

Alfa Romeo Tipo B Grand Prix Monoposto: High Speed Laps of Luxury

As any true car connoisseur will willingly testify, classic racing cars are the true aristocrats of the automotive world. Recognising this, this year’s Festival of Speed – Bonham’s annual car auction where classic gas-guzzlers across the globe go under the gavel – saw keen bidders battling it out to secure the vintage vehicle of their dreams.

Alfa Romeo

Undoubtedly, one of the most remarkable cars up for auction was a 1932-1934 Alfa Romeo Tipo B Grand Prix Monoposto, previously owned by Richard Shuttleworth, the legendary British racing driver and aviator. Arriving just in time for the 1935 race season and coming courtesy of Italy’s Scuderia Ferrari quasi-works team, the car secured its place in the record books that very year, smashing all previous fastest lap times at the Donnington Grand Prix and easily outpacing two Type 59 Bugattis, its close second cousins in the Ferrari family. With such a pedigree, it was no surprise that this remarkable roadster eventually changed hands for an astonishing US$6 million.

A Weekend in Venice: Ferretti Yachts marks 50th anniversary in spectacular style

Ferretti Yachts, that purveyor of ultra-luxury yachts that have charmed royalty and Hollywood icons alike, put-paid to the rumours that nobody throws a party quite like the Italians earlier this summer. As the sea-faring brand hit the bit 5-0, it pulled out all the stops to host a no-holds-barred extravaganza in the beautiful city of Venice.

Esteemed owners of Ferretti Yachts from across the globe and the veritable who’s who of Italian high society descended on The Floating City to help celebrate the marque’s golden jubilee, which marked the culmination of five decades of dedicated, precision yacht-building.

The Italian brand’s story first took root in 1968, when it was founded by siblings Alessandro and Norberto Ferretti as a small family business building bespoke luxury yachts for the social elite of the day. Succeeding decades saw Ferretti Yachts grow to an international scale, soon spreading branches across Europe, North America and Asia, and claiming such luminaries as Brigitte Bardot, Richard Burton and Sophia Loren among its exclusive clientele.

Ferretti Yachts debut the all-new 670 in Venice

Little of its originally humble family roots were evident across the weekend-long celebration, which kicked off at the Palazzo Ducale. Built in 1340, this well-preserved monument overlooks the touristy Piazza San Marco and was once the residence of the Doges of Venice, who ruled over the long-standing republic from this magnificent Gothic structure until 1797, when Napoleon conquered the city-state. Since then, it has acted as administrative offices for various bureaucratic and governmental bodies before finally being transformed into a museum in 1923.

On this particular evening, however, the palace served as the stage for the inaugural night of Ferretti Yachts’ 50th anniversary festivities. Arriving just as the sun began to set, guests were ushered onto the first floor balcony, with its Gothic ogival windows offering prime panoramas of the Riva degli Schiavoni waterfront. The positioning could not have been more perfect. Resplendently lined along the directly adjacent harbour were a fleet of eight of its latest models, shown off splendidly in the waning sunlight.

The pièce de résistance, though, came as in the form of an unexpected overhead fly-by courtesy of Pattuglia Acrobatica Nazionale Frecce Tricolori, the Italian air force’s superbly able acrobatic demonstration wing. Flying in tight formation, nine fighter planes soared past the Palazzo Ducale and over the Venice lagoon, painting the sky entirely in Italy’s unmistakable green, white and red. It was the first time this legendary aerial team had flown over La Serenissima in 25 years – a perfect opening act.

Once suitably recovered from the spectacle, attendees commenced the wining and dining portion of the evening in the expansive Sala del Maggior Consiglio, the original meeting hall of the Grand Council of Venice. It was the first such gathering in this august venue since the last Doge passed away in the late 18th century. Surrounded by a veritable treasure trove of Italian art, most notably Il Paradiso by Tintoretto – the world’s largest canvas painting – and Triumph of Venice crowned by victory by Paolo Veronese, guests enjoyed culinary delights and musical performances late into the night.

12th century Venice Arsenal shipyard
The 12th century Arsenale di Venezia shipyard is usually closed to the public

After a well-deserved rest, Ferretti Yachts launched head-long into the second day’s itinerary at the historic Arsenale di Venezia complex. First constructed in 1104, this network of shipyards and armouries seeded the rise of Venice as a major regional naval and economic power. During its heyday, the complex churned out one entire ship per day, all without any leg-up from modern-day technology, electricity or machinery.

These days, however, the Arsenale is usually strictly off-limits to the public, but thankfully, the Italian navy in this case deigned to loosen this restriction over the weekend especially for Ferretti Yachts’ 50th anniversary. Visitors were invited to partake in a tour of the historic venue, engage in a host of fun-filled activities and explore upcoming products from the yacht manufacturer’s brand partners along the marina, including a first look at Maserati’s latest cars and Emirates’ new First Class Suite on the Airbus A380 airplane.

But without a doubt the biggest attraction was centred at the Darsena Nuovissima – the Arsenale’s central docking area. Berthed here and making its international debut was the Ferretti 670, the first-ever flybridge whose exteriors and interiors were designed entirely by Ferretti Group, with the help of renowned Italian architect Filippo Salvetti.

Boasting a roomy 25 square metres of space including a capacious front bow area, the 670 features a sumptuous master bedroom along with a well-appointed study, with potential owners free to customise its exact specifications according to their own needs.

Alongside this debuting model, moored like so many ducks in a line, were 10 additional specimens of the marque’s luxury fleet, ranging from the more down-to-earth 45-foot 450 to another all-new introduction – the 95-foot, four-bedroom 920, a true statement piece for today’s well-heeled millionaire.

Five-star Hotel Danieli, A Luxury Collection Hotel in Venice

After touring the various ships, lunch – a well-curated sampling of the finest modern Italian cuisine – was served at Terrazzo Danieli. The high-end eatery occupies an open patio within Hotel Danieli, A Luxury Collection Hotel – the partner hotel for the event, and one of the city’s landmark accommodations. Cinephiles may well recognise this establishment as it’s something of a Hollywood icon in its own right.

The unambiguously charismatic venue, which encompasses three historic palazzos including the 14th century Palazzo Dandolo, has been the set for such notable silver screen outings as James Bond’s 1979 adventure, Moonraker, Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr’s 1994 rom-com, Only You, and more recently, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie’s adventure/thriller, The Tourist.

Piazza San Marco
Piazzo San Marco, one of Venice’s most iconic landmarks, is just a few steps away from Hotel Danieli

Suitably satiated, there was nothing more to do but wait for the final chapter of the day. And finally, as dusk fell once more, the grand finale of Ferretti’s 50th birthday bash got underway as guests returned to the Venice Arsenale. The ancient Byzantine architecture of the iconic establishment was given a completely 21st century make-over, with strobe lights, an impressive sound system and a fully kitted stage awaiting the 200-plus attendees.

Catered to by none other than that most acclaimed of Italian eateries, Cipriani, guests enjoyed a tasting menu that showcased the very best of Tricolori cuisine. Capping of the night was a performance by Umberto Tozzi, one of the nation’s most famous singers. He took to the stage and performed renditions of his greatest musical numbers, including his 1979 hit Gloria, drawing Ferretti’s 50th festivities to a close on the highest of notes.

Ferretti Yachts’ 50th anniversary proceedings against the picturesque backdrop of Venezia were, in a word, epic. The weekend-long celebrations of its golden jubilee, not only paid homage in spectacular style to its Italian heritage, it also afforded the yacht-maker an opportunity to ably demonstrate its ability to deliver flawless luxury experience with absolutely no boundaries – both in hosting an exclusively extravagant party and in the delivery of its achingly beautiful, super-luxury yachts.

Sneak peek into Grand Basel: Three automotive masterpieces we loved

In the inaugural Grand Basel automobile exhibition coming up in the first week of September, over a 100 cars will be displayed in Basel, Switzerland, including prototypes, racing legends, iconic roadsters, classic vintages and many more. In anticipation of the grand show, the organisers have given us a sneak peek into some of the automotive masterpieces to be exhibited. We have for you a select preview of the top three picks that caught our fancy.

Grand Basel

1994 Benetton-Ford B194

The car that secured one of the world’s fastest racing driver Michael Schumacher first world championship was the 3.5-litre V8 Benetton-Ford B194, in which he won eight of the 16 races in 1994. Known to be a bit of an unpredictable beast, the Benetton could only be ‘tamed’ by Schumacher, with his teammates finding the car a bit of an handful to manage in that eventful season. Fittingly then, more than a decade later, Schumacher’s son, Mick, drove a Benetton-Ford B194 in demonstration laps at the Belgian Grand Prix in 2017 to pay a knowing tribute to his father’s success.

Grand Basel

1947 Cisitalia 202 SC

Founded by industrialist and amateur racing driver, Piero Dusio, the Cisitalia automobile brand is named after his conglomerate, Consorzio Industriale Sportivo Italia. Having already experimented with Italy’s first post-war racing car, Dusio next unveiled the 202 model, meant for roads this time, at Villa d’Este in 1947. So beautiful is its aesthetics that one of the models is exhibited at the MoMa (Museum of Modern Art) in New York, where it is showcased as one of the ten best automotive designs of all time. The car shown at Grand Basel has been restored from a ‘barn find’ condition.

Grand Basel

1956 Porsche 550 1500 RS Spyder

First introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1953, the Porsche 550 model is known to be a confirmed winner in racing events. The particular model of Porsche 550 1500 RS Spyder displayed at Grand Basel is, however, more remarkable than its brethren, because it achieved the feat of being the winner of its class at the German Grand Prix at Nürburgring in 1956. However, some of the other 550 models have been part of other hair-raising tales of driving glory – it is said that, in the 1954 Mille Miglia, Hans Herman managed to drive the 550 under a level crossing barrier just seconds before an express train sped past.

The Switzerland chapter of the Grand Basel show, which takes place on 6-9 September 2018, paves the way for upcoming shows in Miami, from 22 to 24 February 2019, and in Hong Kong in May 2019.

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera: The super GT that pays homage to heritage

Aston Martin has just unveiled its newest grand tourer, Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, at Lanson Place Hotel in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. This is the latest car to be launched under the company’s ambitious Second Century Plan project, which has already seen a number of successful models roll out over the past few years, including the highly anticipated DB11 and the Vantage GT8.

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera

The new super GT – Aston Martin DBS Superleggera – brings together two iconic names that are inherently intertwined with Aston Martin’s heritage. With DBS, Aston Martin revives an iconic nameplate that first appeared in 1967, while with the Superleggera technology, the carmaker pays homage to the historic lightweight construction know-how of the famous Italian coachbuilders Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera.

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera

From its lightweight carbon-fibre body and innovative aerodynamic concepts to its 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine and class-leading in-gear acceleration, Aston Martin DBS Superleggera packs a punch both in looks and performance. Especially, the engine is at the heart of DBS Superleggera’s excellence. Set low and as far back in the chassis as possible to optimise the centre of gravity and weight distribution, the engine develops 725PS at 6500rpm and 900Nm from 1800-5000rpm.

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera

Of course, the DBS Superleggera comes with a generous dose of standard features, including keyless entry, tyre pressure monitoring system, a 360-degree camera, a complete infotainment system, a satellite navigation system and a Wi-Fi hub. All-in-all, a neat package!

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Patrik Nilsson, Aston Martin Asia-Pacific President, seemed visibly happy with the new car. “The new DBS Superleggera is an important chapter in our Second Century Plan, as it completes our vision to replace our core sports car model. I hope that those who get a chance to view it will agree that it has tremendous presence and charisma,” he said.

BMW HK celebrates 50th anniversary with JOY IS TIMELESS mega event

German luxury automaker BMW has been charming Hong Kong’s car enthusiasts for quite a while now – five decades to be exact. To celebrate its 50th anniversary in the city, BMW HK has kicked off an expansive showcase entitled JOY IS TIMELESS at Harbour City. The mega event consists of three separate exhibits: ‘Joy of Legacy’, ‘Joy of Excitement’ and ‘Joy of Sharing’.

The inaugural day of BMW HK’s 50th festivities, which runs until 5 August, centred on a dual celebration. First up, the focus was wholly on ‘Joy of Legacy’ with the unveiling – and Asian debut – of the 1972 BMW Turbo Concept. This sleek red-and-ochre supercar was originally developed as a prototype design and was introduced to the world at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany. Believed to be the precursor to the iconic BMW M series, it’s one of only two such cars in the world.

BMW HK brings historically iconic cars to Harbour City

As evening arrived, the spotlight shifted to ‘Joy of Excitement’. This time, though, the focus was all on the arrival of the future as BMW HK pulled back the covers on its all-new X4. This second incarnation of the Sports Active Coupe is said to offer up even more hands-on driving excitement thanks to upgrades of its iDrive 6.0 system. With an evolved front overhang and rear contour, this speedster’s athletic appeal is unmistakable.

Concurrent to these two highlights were a display of BMW’s iconic cars its historic catalogue, ranging from the tiny and adorably dome-shaped 1955 Isetta to its latest i8 supercar. Visitors will also have an opportunity to get their hands on various BMW HK-themed souvenirs and gifts.

Aston Martin 2014 Centenary Edition Vanquish reaches 007th gear in auction

As any true James Bond aficionado will happily testify, rather than titillating moviegoers with wanton violence or low-cut cleavages, the truly pornographic content of the 007 franchise comes in the form of its sleek, sexed-up supercars, vehicles that give a whole new meaning to auto erotica. Of late, the most car-horny of these sultry saloons has been the bespoke, midnight-blue Aston Martin 2014 Centenary Edition Vanquish currently owned by Daniel Craig, the premium Bond du jours.

Aston Martin Centenary Edition Vanquish

Imagine then the erotic frisson occasioned among fans when this particular Bond buggy was announced as the centrepiece of Exception, a unique, one-off auction event staged by Christie’s New York earlier this year. With its inevitable ‘007’ number plate and the added bonus of a Craig-signed plaque, the road-ready ‘mint condition’ car was initially tipped to go for US$400,000 but, in the end, the winning bid – courtesy of an anonymous buyer topped US$468,500.

Aston Martin Centenary Edition Vanquish

Upping the vehicle’s coveted quotient even higher is the fact that the ‘Centenary Edition’ is strictly limited to only a 100 cars, with each boasting a unique graduated paint finish and sterling silver Aston Martin wings. This particular Aston Martin Centenary Edition Vanquish was further customised based on Daniel Craig’s personal preferences; hence, the deep-blue, hand-stitched leather interiors – keeping in mind the actor’s favourite colours, a leather box of accessories, including Bang & Olufsen earphones in leather pouch, silver Aston Martin cufflinks and a silver roller-ball pen.

All proceeds went to The Opportunity Network, a charity dedicated giving a fresh chance to disadvantaged youngsters across the US, an initiative supported by both Craig and Rachel Weisz, his British-born actress wife.
