Check out what Mercedes-Benz unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show

From sporty off-roaders to electric city cars, Mercedes-Benz showcased an impressive new line-up at the 88th Geneva Motor Show. Here’s a rundown of the cars that caught our eye from the house of the three-pointed star.

Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé

An addition to the successful AMG GT family, the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé promises more space and more power. The new coupé is the first four-door sports car from Affalterbach and beautifully links the legendary SLS and AMG models. “There are enough cars out there that are a moving compromise. The all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé certainly is not. There’s plenty of space in the back – and plenty of performance in the front,” says Dr Dieter Zetsche, Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Mercedes-AMG G 63

Equipped with AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, AMG-specific driving programmes and optional widescreen cockpit, the G 63 has carved a space for itself in the highly competitive off-roader segment. Speed junkies will be particularly thrilled by the 430 kW (585 hp) 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine that helps leap the speed from zero to 100 km/h in a mere 4.5 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Merc’s most successful model range starts its fifth year of production with a list of upgrades, making it closer than ever to the higher-end S-Class. From stylish revisions to the exterior and interior design to better fuel efficiency, even the entry-level models, C 43 4MATIC Saloon and Estate nothing to be sniffed at. According to Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, “The new C-Class is available with most of the comfort attributes of the S-Class, all of its intelligent drive features – including its automated driving functions – and even more driving fun.”

smart EQ

Mercedes-Benz has ventured into the world of with smart EQ. Launched in two editions – EQ fortwo and forfour – these compact beauties are integrated into the Mercedes-Benz EQ family with the ‘edition nightsk’. Smart EQ comes with “smart EQ control” apps and a 22 kW rapid charger, both of which were displayed in Geneva, alongside the cars.

Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales, sums it up well. “We want to offer a tempting solution for every customer: from city car to off-road legend, from AMG performance to Maybach luxury, whether you are a geek or a family dad or a businesswoman,” she said, speaking to the press in Geneva.

Rare 1958 Porsche 550A shines at Bonhams auction, fetching US$5.17 million

A rare Porsche 550A from 1958 was snapped up at Bonhams’ Scottsdale Auction earlier this year. With its impeccable racing pedigree and well-documented provenance, the vintage sports car was a top attraction at the event.

The rare Porsche has a strong racing pedigree

Built in 1958 as the penultimate model of a limited 40-car release, this Porsche was first purchased by Dutch nobleman, Count Carel Godin de Beaufort. Under his ownership, it scored a class win and was sixth overall at the Nürburgring 1000 Kilometers. It also proved its mettle at the grueling Le Mans 24 Hours race, placing second in class and fifth overall.

These victories marked the beginning of a prodigious and long-lived racing career that continued well into the 21st century, and spanned both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Most recently, the 550A participated in ten consecutive Mille Miglia races in Italy.

Rare Porsche 550A hits the market

When it went under the hammer, this rare Porsche 550A was smartly outfitted in its historic #32 livery from the 1958 Le Mans. Under the hood lay a period-accurate engine and a 4-speed gearbox. Given its impressive provenance and near-mint condition, it came as no surprise that the vintage sports car fetched a final price of US$5.17 million.

Bentley Continental GT, a grand tourer that thinks it’s a sports car

The Bentley Continental GT has managed to be a true grand tourer, without compromising its sports car-like aptitude for speed.

This may seem like a difficult feat, but, perhaps, a little history lesson might be illuminating. The original Continental GT was a triumph for Bentley. Launched some 15 years ago, the car soon became the conveyance of choice for soccer players and the more ostentatious brand of muso. The first Bentley to use production line techniques in its manufacture, it sold like spittle guards at Trump rally.

As with the car it replaces, this new Continental is large, luxurious and expensive. At 2,244kg, it is heavy enough crush any imperfections on the road surface, although its sophisticated computer-controlled air suspension allows it to simply glide over the majority of highway hickeys.

At 4.8 metres long and 2.2 wide, there’s little chance of stealing a Smart Car’s parking space. There’s also ample boot space for a good fortnight’s worth of luggage.

As well as being spacious enough, the interior is every bit as luxurious as the Bentley name entails. Indeed, its leather seats are so soft it may transpire that only the finest-quilted cattle contributed to their coverings.

The Continental’s interior is also exceptionally functional. The control interfaces are pleasingly chunky, moving with the kind of easy action that suggests that years of faultless operation lie ahead.

While upholding the values of time-served craftsmanship, the Continental’s cabin is far from old fashioned. Mounted on a three-faced tumbler, a large section of dashboard rotates to reveal blank facia, a trio of traditional dials or a 312mm touchscreen, displaying the driver’s choice of satellite navigation, climate conditions or Netflix catch-up.

On the move, the Continental is, indeed, a sumptuously smooth means of conveyance, with its air suspension suppressing any jolt occasioned by an unavoidable spot of tarmac turbulence.

The merest prod of the accelerator can shake up things a bit though. Fitted with a 6-litre twin turbo W12 engine – capable of producing 467Kw – as standard, this Continental can get very loud and very fast very, very quickly.

Any such acceleration is accompanied by a satisfying roar as the 12 cylinders and the two turbo-chargers kick in. Overall, this brief sound surge is about the only giveaway that the engine is, indeed, turbo-charged, with little or no lag between any change in throttle position and the engine’s powerful response,.

From a standing start, this big Bentley can crack 100kph in just 3.7 seconds. With a maximum velocity of 333kph, the acceleration just never seems to diminish, still pulling strongly at the speedo glides past the 200kph mark.

It’s hard to believe that any aspect of this car could be more impressive than its 467Kw engine. Until, that is, you stamp on the brake pedal. The violence of the subsequent deceleration is literally breath-taking, with the lungs squeezed of air as they’re hurled against the seat belt.

While the new Bentley Continental GT is just too truly massive to keep up with a genuinely lightweight sportster through all that really twisty stuff, it’s a more capable sports package than that offered by almost any other GT car – and all without giving up any of the genuine comfort the grand tourer name truly demands.

Bentley Continental GT from around HK$1.7m
Engine: 6.0 litre twin turbo W12
Power: 467 Kw
Torque: 900 Nm
Transmission: 8-speed dual clutch automatic through all-wheel drive

From Luxe to Loony: The most extreme luxury off-roaders of 2018

Let’s be honest. The vast majority of luxury off-roaders on the market will never ever be called to do anything close to real rough-terrain driving. But that hasn’t stopped carmakers from releasing ever-hardier models. Nor has it dissuaded true-blue motoring enthusiasts from eagerly snapping them up. With a fresh crop of cars about to hit the market, we round up the best luxury off-roaders of 2018.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The G-Class is something of an aberration among Mercedes-Benz’s sleek, luxury-focused inventory – in a good way. Its three locking differentials offer cross-country drivers nimbleness and stability across the even the most challenging of terrains. The G-Class also makes short work of severe slopes thanks to tight front and rear overhangs. It can even ford waters up to 60cm deep with nary a drop leaking through. Small wonder, then, that in addition to being our Car of the Month (see our review here), it’s also made our list of 2018’s best luxury off-roaders.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport

The latest model of Land Rover’s rugged Range Rover Sport is nothing to be sniffed at. Fitted with a new V8 engine that produces 550bhp, it’s the brand’s fastest car. It also eats up even most difficult terrains with ease, thanks to the dedicated Terrain Response 2.0 technology onboard. Pre-set modes include Sand, Mud and Ruts, Grass/Gravel/Snow and even Rock Crawl.

Bentley Bentayga

Unsurprisingly, Bentley puts the ‘luxury’ in luxury off-roaders with its new Bentayga. The extremely personalisable SUV boasts all the high-quality creature comforts synonymous with the Bentley name.

But don’t let the fancy looks fool you. Under the hood, it’s a whole new beast. The 6.0-litre W12 engine produces a top speed of 301kmph, making it the world’s fastest SUV. Its off-road capabilities are equally spectacular – the Bentayga’s engine and gearbox are equipped to handle longitudinal and lateral angles up to 35 degrees.

Howe & Howe Ripsaw EV3-F1

For true adrenaline junkies, Howe & Howe’s new Ripsaw EV3-F1 is THE gold standard for extreme luxury off-roaders. Dubbed ‘the most obnoxious vehicle ever made’, every aspect of this arresting one-man tank cranks the dial up to the max.

A close-up look at the Ripsaw EV3-F1 reveals enormous tank tracks, an extra-strength tubular exoskeleton and a Hellcat motor that delivers up to 1,500bhp. Capable of traversing any terrain and angles up to a whopping 70 degrees, this is the ultimate joy ride for today’s millionaire petrol-heads!

New Aston Martin Vantage debuts edgier look

Despite the finger-numbingly cold weather, hordes of car enthusiasts and industry leaders turned up for the unveiling of the new Aston Martin Vantage last Thursday. They were not left disappointed.

When the drapes came off, it was immediately clear that the new Aston Martin Vantage is breaking with tradition. Gone are the soft, curved edges so evident in sister models like the elegant DB11 and the sleek Vanquish. Instead, the British carmaker has opted for strong angles and a distinctly sporty feel.

Aston Martin Vantage boasts a sportier, edgier feel

A 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine and a matching eight-speed ZF transmission, placed low and to the rear of the car, produces over 500bhp and 685Nm of torque. This gives the car a zippy top speed of 314kmph and a 0-100kmph time of just 3.6 seconds.

Aston Martin has also stepped away from its usual aerodynamic designs, instead opting for a gaping front grill, roomy side vents and a barely-there spoiler to firmly pin down the car in tight corners. It is also equipped with Electronic Rear Differential, a first for the brand.

New Aston Martin Vantage interiors blend sporty chic with luxurious accoutrements

Despite all the upgrades to its athletic performance, the new Aston Martin Vantage doesn’t skimp on high-tech creature comforts. The In-Car Entertainment system boasts an 8-inch display screen, Bluetooth capabilities, Android and Apple compatibility and the Aston Martin Martin Audio System alongside its satellite navigation system.

Dr. Andy Palmer, Aston Martin President and CEO, proudly shared, “I am enormously excited by what we’ve created, a new Vantage that’s more explicit in looks and intent, wrapping heart-pounding performance and dazzling dynamics into an everyday usable package.”

The latest Aston Martin Vantage is a true sportscar

While the new Aston Martin Vantage may ruffle some feathers among true-blue Aston fans, it’s an exciting step into the future for the British car manufacturer and a great way to introduce a whole new generation to the wonders of Aston Martin.

The new model (priced from HK$2,480,000) is on sale now, with deliveries beginning in the third quarter of this year.

Mercedes raises the bar for MPV luxury with new V-Class Exclusive Edition

Earlier this week, motor enthusiasts were treated to a first look of the latest version of Mercedes-Benz’s popular V-Class people carrier. This newly launched model, dubbed the V-Class Exclusive Edition, was personally unveiled by Volker Mornhinweg, Global Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, and Andreas Binder, President and CEO of the manufacturer’s Hong Kong operations.

While the V-Class Exclusive Edition retains the same engine as its ‘regular’ 2018 brethren (a state-of-the-art four-cylinder engine producing 221bhp and 350Nm of torque), it’s clearly pushing the envelope in terms of luxury and comfort.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in the spacious interiors. The front-row Captain Seats come with three massage programme functions and individualised temperature controls. Meanwhile, back-seat passengers can enjoy panoramic views through the generously expansive sunroof, store drinks in the centre console’s in-built refrigerator and enjoy fantastic beats thanks, to the Burmester surround sound system.

On top of all that, the V-Class Exclusive Edition also comes with easily adjustable ride settings (comfort, efficient, sporty and manual) and Active Parking Assist with a 360-degree camera.

Mercedes-Benz’s clever engineering and careful attention to detail has once again paid off, giving Hong Kong car lovers a new level of ‘Exclusive’ luxury to look forward to.

Smart Cars with AI: The future of urban transport is here

Dashboard of a Smart Car from Samsung

Jack Ma may have said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a threat to us at the recent World Economic Forum at Davos, but car companies are pouring big bucks into AI-driven smart car designs. According to telecom giant Ericsson, smart cars with AI are here to stay and will revolutionise the way we travel.

Ericsson mentioned in a recent report that the advent of 5G technology will make roads safer by enhancing vehicle-to-vehicle communication. Sensors embedded in roads, railways and airport runways will make vehicle-to-infrastructure communication smoother as well.

While this may seem like the stuff of our wildest sci-fi fantasies, the reality is closer than ever. This January onwards, self-driving shuttle buses have begun plying one of the busiest areas of Stockholm. Travelling at 24 km per hour, these buses offer a glimpse into the future of urban transport.

Predictably, carmakers are competing against each other to offer the latest technology to customers. At the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 – the global stage for innovation – automotive solution provider Nvidia announced partnerships with several carmakers, including biggies Audi and Volkswagen.

Audi has already showcased an autonomous test car at CES this year, but with Nvidia’s AI solutions, the learning capability of smart cars will be enhanced further.

The new models, with inbuilt computing hardware and software, will hit the markets by 2020.

Smart car dashboard

Nvidia has also partnered with Volkswagen to add ‘intelligent co-pilot’ systems. VW will use Nvidia’s Drive IX Intelligent Experience platform to enable a wide range of features, including voice and facial recognition, gesture control, and safety warnings.

Another automaker that is breaking new grounds in this area is Tesla. It recently introduced TeslaBot, the virtual assistant synced with the Tesla models S and X. The new bot is similar to Tesla’s native app, but offers more in terms of allowing users to interact with their car from a desktop or a phone.

In sync with current technology trends, Uber has already tested its first batch of self-driving smart cars in 2016. It has also formed the Uber AI Labs to develop self-driving cars with the help of top scientists and engineers.

It seems the days of rude drivers and parking tickets are going to be over soon. Let’s hitch a ride to the future already!

G-Class review: A modern Merc with personality

Mercedes-Benz, by and large, makes excellent cars. But for all their comfort and technical wizardry, modern Mercs are rather lacking in character. Technical perfection and inoffensive, mainstream styling leave the cars bereft of distinguishing characteristics for one to grow fond of.

One member of the Benz family that still has a bit of personality, though – the unapologetically upright, wilfully different G-Class off-roader. Designed in the 1970s as an off-road military vehicle, the G’s slab-sided exterior has changed little over the intervening decades, maintaining the look and feel of no-nonsense parade ground rectitude.

In a world full of casual SUVs pretending to be off-road vehicles, the G550 stands out like a drill sergeant at a yoga retreat. Designed with scarcely a rounded surface in sight, its retro shape is highly distinctive, leaving little chance of becoming lost in a crowded car park.

While almost all modern 4x4s would struggle with the least bit of off-road driving, the G-Class backs up its stern, outdoorsy appearance with military grade engineering fit for the wildest stretch of wilderness.

Beam axles in the front and rear, combined with 210mm ground clearance and permanent four-wheel drive, make the G550 just about the most capable off-road performer money can buy. Power is transmitted to the wheels via a seven-speed automatic gearbox with either high range for road driving or low range for dirty work. The car can even switch between gearbox modes without coming to a halt – simply engage neutral, let the speed drop below 15kph and select low range.

Unusually, even for hardcore off-road vehicles, the muddy Merc also has three locking differentials: centre, rear and front. These offer enthusiastic cross-country drivers all the tools they need to get into and out of especially unwelcoming terrain.

With short overhangs front and rear, the Merc can take on especially severe slopes without scraping its nose or tail. It can even keep occupants’ feet dry while fording water up to 60cm deep. It’s here – down in the mud – where the car’s personality really shines through, especially for those unaccustomed to driving dedicated off-roaders.

Mercedes concedes that only a tiny proportion of G-Class drivers will ever take the car off the smooth confines of paved roads, but driving on highways is no less exciting.

Indeed, the G550 is bursting with restless energy. The tall suspension that’s so supple on uneven surfaces has nothing to do on a nice, flat stretch of tarmac, so it gets busy rolling this way and that. The slightest cornering force induces body roll, making for an entertaining drive, even at low speeds.

The steering adds to this sense of vitality. The G’s recirculating ball steering system is built to insulate the driver from the shocks and knocks encountered while rolling through a forest. On a smooth surface, that forgiving steering results in zero feedback from tyres to fingertips.

With 4.0 litres, two turbo chargers and 310kW, the G550 accelerates respectably well for such a large car. The sprint to 100kph takes around six seconds, but there’s little point in driving the G fast on the road. The body roll is too pronounced, and the steering too vague.

While mechanical fundamentals may preclude a relaxing experience on the road, there are some techno-goodies to help make life with the G easier. Bi-xenon headlights help one see what’s up ahead, and blind spot cameras reveal perils approaching from the rear.

Fuel consumption is predictably high. At well over two tonnes, that’s a lot of mass to move – not to mention three differentials constantly sapping power before it reaches the road, all of which is wrapped in a body shell with the aero-efficiency of a brick.

Although austerely old-fashioned on the outside, the G’s interior is modern and luxurious. Mercedes-Benz’s Comand info-tainment system – accessed through a 200mm touchscreen – comes as standard, as does a Harman Kardon sound system, 40GB hard drive and smartphone connectivity.

On the downside, the G has a narrow interior, with the rear seat only wide enough to accommodate two adults side by side. The rear luggage space, too, is a touch cramped.

All this may sound horrifying to drivers raised with the notion that pin-sharp steering and silky ride are the holy grails of road transport, but this misses the point. The G-Class isn’t meant to be mainstream; it’s an alternative to the bland ranks of modern SUVs.

Yes, the driving experience is unconventional and restless, but it’s also engaging and entertaining, arguably as rewarding as any high-speed track day missile. It’s a different kind of fun – a kind accessible at socially responsible speeds.

Sadly, this charming exception to Mercedes uniformity is not long for this world. The forces of boredom are conspiring to iron out its quirks, with a new replacement G-Class under development.

So if you want something unusual – or perhaps a car with a personality to match your own nonconformist spirit – now’s your chance.
