Illumination Inspiration: The Art of Lighting with Prof. Eric Yim

As a renowned architect and a dedicated patron of the city’s arts and design industry, Prof. Eric Yim, Honorary Chairman of the Hong Kong Furniture and Decoration Trade Association, is perfectly positioned to understand the importance of lighting and its multifaceted uses in transforming a space. In an exclusive video interview with Gafencu, the interior design virtuoso expounds the benefits of proper illumination in tempering the mood of a room, and the varieties of lighting that can help you enhance your own abode or office.

For Prof. Yim, the importance of lighting is intrinsically tied to the most important of the five senses – vision. “Light actually highlights the colour, rhythm, texture and form of a space,” he explains, “It is the medium that allows us to really see and appreciate a space.”

Through the three categories of illumination – ambient lighting, focal lighting and accent lighting – the design guru says, “you can manipulate the brightness, intensity, direction and even movement of light. In these layers of lighting, we can be more creative, more dynamic. This is why lighting can actually change the perception of a space and also awaken one’s curiosity.”

Prof. Yim also took the time to ask Mee Yee Fong, Design Engineer of RDD Environmental Care, Professional and Lighting for Dyson, the international technology company, about how the high-tech brand consistently delivers innovative designs, including lighting products like the versatile new Dyson Lightcycle Morph floor and desk lamp.

Yim: A lot of Dyson products are game-changers with simple but effective innovation. Are there any approach or methodology that the Dyson teams of designers and engineers have been adopting? What is it like and how to maintain the consistency?

Fong: At Dyson, we believe everything can be better and we constantly strive to find solutions to problems other people ignore. Our passion for problem solving across different disciplines runs throughout our business.

We recently announced a new £2.75 billion investment plan into new technologies and new products over the next five years. The investments will be focused in Singapore, the UK, and the Philippines, and are backed by plans to hire additional engineers and scientists in fields such as software, machine learning and robotics. We look to further invest into research in the fields of robotics, next generation motor technology, intelligent products, machine learning, connectivity, and material science. We stay ahead by always innovating, staying curious, and not being afraid of failure.

Yim: Not all R&D projects would turn into successful products.  How would Dyson engineers decide to stop a project or continue with extra resources?

Fong: Dyson engineers always start with a real-life problem. Until a solution is found, we do not give up. If we take lighting as an example, Jake Dyson has been involved in hi-tech lighting for many years before he incorporated his inventions under the global Dyson brand in 2015. Since then, he’s been working with Dyson’s 2,000+ engineers to drive future portfolios of technology – in lighting and beyond. For the last few years, Jake and a team of 90 engineers and scientists have been dedicated to the development of Dyson Lightcycle™ lighting – our first mass market lighting selection. It takes years to develop, test, and enhance the technologies of a product before it is ready for the market and the Dyson Lightcycle Morph™ light is the latest addition to our lighting technology.

We are all aware of the agony of waiting with their palms outstretched under an outdated hand dryer which leaves our hands feeling uncomfortably half-dry or half-wet. Nor do such machines fail to do their job, they also use up a lot of electricity in doing so. Now we can bid an unfond farewell to that discomfort, courtesy of the Dyson Airblade 9kJ hand dryer, said to be not only the quickest but also the most energy-saving hand dryer from Dyson’s Airblades stable, all thanks to its unique design Curved Blade and cutting-edge technology.

Dyson Airblade 9kJ

Introducing: The groundbreaking Dyson Pure Cryptomic purifying fan heater

The electronic experts at Dyson are no strangers to crafting cutting-edge gadgets that address such varying issue as tangled tresses, dust mites and climate control, all to ensure your life is as seamless as possible. Now, in a bid to burnish its reputation further, it has just unveiled its all-new Dyson Pure Cryptomic.

Built as an all-in-one purifying fan heater, the Dyson Pure Cryptomic is fitted with three automatic sensors that measure the indoor air quality in real time. First, there are the lasers that detect ultrafine pollutant particles. Then, there’s a sensor that records relative humidity and temperature in its vicinity. But the most impressive of all is the VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) sensor that can track toxic particles like benzene, nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde.

In today’s age of inside living, indoor pollutants are a serious cause for concern. Not only are outdoor toxins introduced when doors and windows are opened, but harmful VOCs can be produced by such innocuous everyday items as plants, domestic heating units and cleaning products. In particular, the Dyson Pure Cryptomic is looking to target one particularly harmful substance found in our daily lives – formaldehyde, a potential carcinogenic commonly found in homes and schoolrooms across the city.

To cleanse these pollutants, the cutting-edge device comes equipped with 9m of condensed and sealed borosilicate microfibres that can capture almost all ultrafine toxins such as bacteria, pollen and mould. It also features a unique catalytic coating that traps and eradicates formaldehyde, chemically transforming it into harmless water and carbon dioxide.

David Hill, Dyson’s Design Lead for Environmental Control, expounded: “Harnessing Dyson’s expertise in chemistry, sensing filtration and fluid dynamics, Dyson Pure Cryptomic machines are engineered to be the total air purification solution for your home – removing ultra-fine particles, odours, gases and destroying formaldehyde, continuously.”

The new HK$6,880 Dyson Pure Cryptomic is available in Hong Kong from 3 October. For more information, please visit: https://shop.dyson.hk

Vacuum in Vogue: The Dyson Cyclone V10 is a true dust buster

After a series of innovative new home technology and product releases – including the Airwrap hair styler, Lightcycle Lamp and Pure Hot+Cool Purifier – that wrapped up its 2018 season, British home tech specialist Dyson is kicking off the new year in true style with its Dyson Cyclone V10. Developed as a means to fight against the growth of dust and bacteria in our homes, the Dyson Cyclone V10 is the latest iteration of its successful vacuum cleaner line.

Dyson Cyclone V10 is Dyson's latest vaccuum cleaner

Built to eliminate invisible dust particles around the house – particularly under-the-surface particles that are often trapped within floor crevices – the cord-free vacuum is equipped with an advanced motor capable of spinning up to 125,000rpm. Almost half the size and weight of its predecessor, its punch-packing suction power has the ability to remove more than five different types of allergens.

Bye-bye Bad Hair Days: Our favourite luxury hair styling tools

Hong Kong may be one of the greatest cities in the world, but it’s no secret that our water is far from the top of the freshest drinking pools. The affects of chlorine filled H2O can lead to dry and frizzy hair, breakage, faded locks and colour or the absolute worst – hair loss. Here at Gafencu we are committed to helping you save your pretty curls or sleek straight dos, and so, we have gathered such top hair styling tools on the market as Dyson and T3.

Don’t be fooled into thinking the healthier hair process ends when you leave the shower, in fact, its just beginning. Water-filters that purify and reduce chlorine, are of course a good start. Next comes finding  a hair towel that minimises the effort and damage of drying your hair, to high-end brushes and combs that promise to strengthen and heal both cuticles and your scalp. The real fun starts with hair dryers, rollers and stylers that ensure quality and protection.

Some Must-Have Hair Styling Tools

Introducing: Lightcycle lamp and Pure Hot+Cool purifier by Dyson

With a string of new products – including the Supersonic Professional Edition hairdryer and the Airwrap hair styler – released within the last few months, 2018 has been an excitingly innovative year for British home tech specialist Dyson. And yet, it seems like there’s still more new designs in the pipelines. At an exclusive media event last week, the company unveiled the two newest products in their considerable line-up: the Lightcycle lamp and the Pure Hot + Cool air purifier.

The Dyson Lightcycle lamp was created in response to the needs of Digital Age smart home owners. Equipped with intelligent daylight tracking technology, it has the ability to replicate natural lighting no matter what season or where the home is located. Jimmy McIntosh, Senior Design Engineer at Dyson, elaborates on its special features and functions, and how it will change the way our homes look and feel in the video below.

The Pure Hot + Cool air purifier, meanwhile, is the brand’s newest air purifier. Equipped with cutting edge technology, it can automatically detect pollution levels and capture ultrafine pollutants in the air, leaving your home fresh and clean. In an intelligent move, this handy gadget can also simultaneously double as a heating and cooling fan for even more versatility, making it the first heating/cooling purifier of its kind. Owen Renault, Dyson’s Category Intelligence Engineer for Environmental Control describes this process and user benefits in the short clip below.

Both the new Lightcycle and Pure Hot+Cool devices are now available from Dyson in Hong Kong.

Dyson Airwrap styler to blow away bad hair days

Fresh from the success of its Supersonic hair dryer, household appliances manufacturer Dyson has launched the Dyson Airwrap – a hairdryer-cum-styler that uses jets of air to style your hair into voluminous curls at home.

Dyson Airwrap

So, ladies, it’s time to eschew those hair sprays, because the Dyson Airwrap uses only hot air to give you the same effect without causing the damage that hair sprays may cause. It’s all thanks to the Coanda effect that apparently occurs when a high-speed jet of hot air flows across a surface and sticks to it because of the difference in air pressure. The result is curly, wavy or smooth hair, just the way you like it.

As founder James Dyson puts it: “We have been obsessively manipulating airflow for more than 25 years. It is one of our core expertise. Harnessing the power of Dyson’s digital motor, we have engineered a truly unique styling tool preventing heat damage when styling. I’m immensely proud of what our engineers have achieved.”

Dyson Airwrap

Available in three versions – Dyson Airwrap Volume + Shape, Dyson Airwrap Smooth + Control, Dyson Airwrap Complete –  the stylers cater to all hair types. So whether it’s limp hair that needs volume or frizzy hair that needs smoothening, Dyson’s new gadget is sure to blow away all your hair agonies.

Gold-ilocks: Introducing the Dyson Supersonic 23.75 Karat Gold Hair Dryer

Dyson Supersonic’s new hair dryer comes blessed with a touch of gold. Designed by James Dyson himself, the 23.75 Karat Gold Hair Dryer – which has been perfected using precision technology – has been gold-leafed through a traditional hand-gilding method using 23.75k gold. Needless to say, it’s the first hair dryer of its kind!

Introducing the super-luxe Dyson Supersonic 23.75 Karat Gold Hair Dryer

Explaining his avant garde approach, James Dyson says: “Gold is one of the most resilient materials in the world and has been used in design, sculpture and architecture for centuries. Like the engineering process, we pride ourselves on, gilding is a true example of meticulous craftsmanship.”

However, the Dyson Supersonic 23.75 Karat Gold Hair Dryer is not only a looker, its power-packed performance comes courtesy of its D9 digital motor, its Air Multiplier™ technology, a microprocessor, magnetic attachments and four different heat settings.

Say goodbye to bad hair days already!

All-in-all, then, it seems that the British technology company has once again managed to raise the bar and push a long-neglected product firmly into modernity – a fact that countless hair professionals have embraced with delight.

Dyson unveils purifier heater just in time for winter

Winter is coming — and that means coats and scarves will have to be worn indoors and outdoors. Sunny days spent frolicking on a beach/junk/hill will soon be nothing but a distant memory once the gloomy weather rolls in and consumes the city.

And with the gloomy weather comes a drop in temperature, which will turn a lot of homes into igloos or ice palaces, depending on where you live.

There are, however, a number of ways to keep warm when the temperature drops: wear lots of clothes, start a fire, embrace another person, but most people tend to buy a heater.

And with this in mind, Dyson has launched a purifier heater with a bladeless fan that is capable of warming or cooling the air in your home.

The Dyson Pure Hot + Cool also automatically purifies the pollutants in your home, while simultaneously reporting the indoor and outdoor air quality to the Dyson app.

The Dyson Link app, developed for iOS and Android, allows users to remotely monitor the air quality, which is perfect for people who have a connected home.
